Through my own ignorance of the Canadian EI system, and my current complete confusion, I find myself a bit lost here. I was originally under the impression that you were unable to apply for EI until you were actually eligible to work. Now I read on the servicecanada site that you should apply no later than 4 weeks or could lose benefits. So I guess my question is, Mel came here on March 23, 2009, we got Married a month later, and applied for AoS on August 1, eventually receiving her Greencard on Nov. 17. Is she still eligible to apply for EI?

Yes, she should have applied for EI ASAP. Ur best bet is to contact them via phone and explain the situation, they may or may not be able to help you

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

First EI check came today!

So a question for you all...When I log onto My Service Canada Account...even though my claim has been approved, and my first payment has come through it still says I have no active claim when I log onto SCA. Do residents outside Canada have access to online account information? I know that we cannot do online reporting but its still frustrating!

Whooooo :dance:EAD card arrived today!! I'm going to call EI on Monday and see the best way to send the info. ( fax or email ) And the fact it's a plastic card!! Guess I wasn't around if anyone else posted about that..

Oh I do hope that means I'll see a deposit in my bank account soon!! I'll have to clear up the issue of name too. Card is in married and report cards are in my other one. I hope a copy of the marriage license will do the trick. We'll go by the SS office on Tuesday and get my SSN card in my married name too. That might prove to be interesting....

Hi Joyce! All my EI information is still in my maiden name, my GC copy I sent them is in my married name, they never asked to see a marriage certificate. My bank info and all of that is still in maiden name as well. (TDCanada Trust has the most ridiculous policy that name changes be done IN PERSON!!!) So I won't be changing anything in Canada until I return to visit!

I believe the date of your claim starts on the date the EAD was approved, then there is a mandatory 2 week waiting period, which by the time you have received it, it probably has been 2 weeks. So hopefully you get some $$ soon! Give Donna a call and ask for the best way to send a copy of EAD, she might call you back with the fax #. The email I sent her was because 2 days after I faxed mine it hadn't shown up yet.

It won't say that because you are doing paper cards and thereby don't really have access to the electronic services. Don't worry, everything is fine ... it will always look that way :)

I couldn't get my service account to work for EI so I called the help line for that page, and was told that I only had a temporary PIN number to call EI and have it changed to one I choose. So I did that through the 1-800 number and still didn't work. So I called the interstate claims office and was told that option is not available to interstate claims.

No electronic services are ever available to anyone doing paper cards. It's a bummer, but I guess that's the way they have to do it ...

So my EI letter finally came today, I filed September 6th. They just finalized it. Its the normal "cannot pay you benefits as your unauthorized to work" and gives you thiry days to appeal. Do I have to appeal it and say I will send the EAD when it comes, or do you just wait and continue to send in cards and the EAD when it comes? I am sure this has been asked over and over but were up to 71 pages on the EI forum. I'll be ready for old age pension before I'd get through it all! ;)

I just got through to the EI office and talked to Donna. She is such a sweetie. She told me that I just need to keep sending in my cards and that once my EAD comes that I can send it in. I am so excited, because I haven't collected EI in like forever I am classified as a long term employee so I get extended weeks and an extension on the end of my claim. I am hoping and praying that I don't need this and I get a job right away but its a nice safety net.:dance::dance:
