Just wondering....

My last day of work is Nov 13 and I plan to enter the US by the end of November. Can I still apply for EI benefits? It's within 30 days so, I should be OK right?

Sure - you start things off online anyway - why not do it as soon as you have you ROE in hand?

I received a phone call from EI last week on my old cell phone, saved the voicemail but then forgot the next day my account was going to be deactivated! Ugh! I received a letter from EI today dated last week saying that my claim has been denied because I need proper work authorization..blah..blah...but at the bottom of the letter it said once EAD has been received, the claim may be reconsidered! Let's hope I actually don't have to use EI, but its nice to know its there just in case!

Sapphire- I haven't even gotten around to changing my name with Canadian bank and after reading about your experience with TD, I am less than enthused that you have to appear in person for a legal name change! Arggh

How is customhouse supposed to work if you have your married name on your account in the U.S.A and you want to transfer funds back to Canada.....but TD won't let you change your name! *Pulls out hair* (Student loans and GMAC)....When I start working again this should be interesting....

So, let me get this straight.

You have to have an EAD to apply for EI?

That seems silly, I thought you got EI while you were waiting to work again.

The EI government site is so confusing.

You have to be willing and able to find work to receive EI, so if you can't legally work, I don't believe they don't see you as eligible.

I was reading the first few pages, and it honestly seems kind of pointless to apply for EI.

Once I get my EAD I'm hoping to find a job within the first 2 weeks, and they stop giving money when you find a job, so it just seems silly to do all that work for not very much money.

Oh well, the thread's worth the read anyway.

Well if you dont apply right away (before u get the EAD) then for sure you will get no benefits, lol Once You get the EAD, then ur benefits will start! One has to apply for EI within a certain time frame of quitting ur job and moving to the USA.

Guess what adds to the confusion, is that in the past some K1 were able to get EI right away even without the EAD as Cdn officials dont know who can/can't work in the USA. Seems they have caught on that K1's cant work right away. If ur a CR-1, one would be elgible for EI right away, as a CR-1 can work right from the start.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Honestly, part of me feels it's pointless too, as I'm going to be looking for a job long before I receive my EAD, and even if I were able to receive benefits, the fact that I'm down to part time (if that) right now will render me little.

But I think I'm going to try anyhow, just in case I don't find a job right off the bat... as the chance of that little bit of cash would help out should I need it.

Well it's a good safety if you don't happen to find a job right away. I never ended up using my EI since I got a job offer a day after receiving my EAD, but you can never be too sure about it. It doesn't really require a lot of effort, you just have to fill out a form online. Took me 20 minutes. Then you mail them a few things and that's pretty much it.

I don't see how it's pointless - you paid into the benefit and you are entitled to it...I realize you haven't maybe paid into it as long as I had, but still.

I looked at it as.....I was 37, had been paying EI premiums from my pay since I was 16 and had never used it....why shouldn't I get a little goodness back from the Cdn Gov't when I could use a hand...otherwise I would have moved to the US and my $$$$$ would have been donated to some other lucky person :)

Ok so I also got another letter from EI today, saying that my maximum allowable benefit is 38 weeks, which is fine and dandy I don't want to use EI unless absolutely necessary! They also sent me more report cards! You guys know I am not LEGALLY allowed to work! Ugh!

Question for you all: I think I already know the answer to this....but for "other monies received" on the report cards do I have to include $$ received as GIFTS from our wedding? Some of it was cash, so no way to really track it, but some were checks written out to either Mr.&Mrs. or just Mr. Can I just claim that my husband received most of it? Everything we received was split in half between the two of us.

Are you talking about reporting your wedding gift money on your EI cards? Those cards are referring to money such as additional vacation payout, actual taxable income that you may have received as you left your last employer....maybe you cashed in your company stock or something.....no need to add your wedding gift $$$$$ - that's not income
