I did the direct deposit option (could take care of that online while starting the initial app)...I am excitedly waiting for my first payment..NOT

Employers MUST send you your ROE by law, I didn't find I needed it when I first applied online - nothing of significance on it...of course you must send to EI once you receive it.

Peggy....I sympathize with being denied...sounds absolutely stupid that the woman is making judgement calls, I'd love to see the actual rules where it says you have to enter the country within x amount of time...etc etc.

Cheers

hmmm, Im not certain, but it MAY be different between a K1 and K3 when it comes to the EAD thing! I'm probbaly wrong, but thought i read on here something about that.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I think you are right...i do not get the 90 day work auth. I called EI office today and she told me to apply as soon as I am unemployed and send in the info as I get it. My main concern is that what if it takes 2 months to get EAD...it has been taking some people that long (some even longer :|).

Apply right away....you can open a claim even while waiting for things like your ROE. Online was really simple and they give you the address of where to send your ROE when you do get it.

I say apply and let them figure out whether you're entitled and to how much/ how long. They will ask the right questions either through a subsequent letter or phone call once they see that you're making a claim from outside Canada. Don't worry too much, the main thing is that you don't want to miss the window of opportunity to file for it.

I applied..knwoing that I was a K1 and technically still waiting for an EAD....they know I'm waiting for that piece of paper, but still consider me eligible. I've gotten a few sets of cards, but none since begining of Jan.

Thanks to Thermophile for mentioning the mail hold-up...I was just reading about how if I don't send back my cards by 3 weeks from the signing date, they can stop the claim! GEEZ...be nice if I had cards to sign!!!!!!! I will phone on Monday and rectify the situation...hope tey don't ask for places I've applied...I haven't been trying TOO hard...let's just say

interesting, I really assumed that the lack of cards had something to do with the fact that I'm here in the near-third world. Someone from EI called my husband and took his hours over the phone-whether that was enough info for him to get the money or not I'm not sure. EI is a bit of a sensitive subject in our house so as long as it seems to be chugging along I try not to ask too many questions. have you called and asked about the lack of cards?

Just wanted to let folks know.....I called into the Out of Canada toll free line - it was listed on the statement they sent of how they had adjudicated my claim.

Took forever to get through..all the lines were busy and the automated service wouldn't even trasnfer the call, just said to call back later. I did so a few times and finally got in the queue around 11:45. I explained that I hadn't received any cards for the weeks beyond Dec 22 so the girl took all my info over the phone, said she wasn't sure about the mail hold-up, but no problem. Today I looked at Service Canada and sure enough, I receive 4 weeks of payments this coming friday...yippee.

Moral of the story, don't hesitate to call them if something's amiss.

I did dread that she would ask where I had applied tho :) Luckily she didn't...I need to get on that................

Apply as soon as you cross the border regardless of the EAD situation. I've been in the US since summer 2007. Still don't have an EAD. But at least I'm in the EI system sending in my cards every so often.
