The link to the cra website is now gone or edited where they explain that one qualifies for EI when emigrating.
is this still a feasible option for us who emigrate to the US?

Google was my friend. Looks like still active.

QUESTION: does my resignation letter need to state the reason for quitting? (Accompany spouse to another country etc) or is this verbally stated to HR so that they can create a correct “record of employment” code in order to qualify for EI?

I remember reading once on here that there was a specific code you are supposed to ask for on your ROE, but I can’t seem to find it anymore. :(

It’s supposed to say relocated but people who have had quit haven’t had an issue because UI can figure it out with the address changing.

Question for those of you who have successfully applied for EI after moving...what happens if you get a job and then lose hours or are laid off? Can you restart your claim or is it done as soon as you start working a certain amount of hours?

I cant seem to find an answer to this when I google and I have never been on EI before so I have no idea how that scenario works...

Thanks in advance for any info or advice :)

Yes. You have time to restart. Also you may be eligible for state unemployment.

Hi! Question on this :

It is my understanding that EI is taxable income.

So do we file our departure tax return with the CRA immediately after immigrating and then another tax return to CRA to include the EI? Or do you file the departure return in April the following year, including all income (employment income, EI)?

You'll file in April (2022) - at the end of the year/early in 2022, you'll also receive a statement with the amount of EI you received.

So to clarify, I file the departure return in April 2022?

or a departure return when I immigrate, and another return the following tax year?

Let's say you emigrate in 2021, you have to file, once, by April 2022.

You might want to reach to CRA International tax office as soon as you emigrate to tell them to stop any GST, or child subsidies, you're receiving though.

Thank you so much for your help, and for clarifying!
