I’ve announced a $50K reward for info on the criminal who killed 5 illegal immigrants Friday. Also directed #OperationLoneStar to be on the lookout. I continue working with state & local officials to ensure all available resources are deployed to respond.”

Thoughts

Apparently the shooter had been deported 4 times and was undocumented, too.

Was anything he said not factual?  Also, how does this event reflect the state of the gun laws in Texas?  To my knowledge an illegal immigrant is not allowed to legally purchase a firearm.

One of the victims was apparently an LPR
But, why highlight the status of the victims and not the status of the shooter?
Also, if one of the victims was a successful asylum seeker the others might also be asylum seekers waiting for their case to be adjudicated.

Did he highlight them apart from the shooter?   Even the story from the Left Leaning Guardian said Abbott mentioned the shooter was illegal.  Btw, the CNN story did not discuss the status of the victims, so not really sure how we can say one was possibly an LPR.  I do agree with the sheriff that the status of the victims is irrelevant, but if the governor knows this status, there is nothing that should keep him from using that information.

I know the Leftist organizations hate it when the facts may get in the way of their narrative, and of course in this case they want to further attack gun laws which would not have made a difference in this case.  In the end, this was a tragedy that could have been prevented if we had a secure border that kept the shooter out after he was deported the first time.

The Houston Chronicle stories have very carefully avoided any mention of the (il)legality of the victims.

The shooter had indeed been deported multiple times, and illegally possessed the firearm.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I'm just here to note that the guy who died was 18 years old and his girlfriend, who also died, was 31 years old. I'm not sure what to call this other than getting bedroom experience.

Tragic story, nonetheless.

I'm curious to see where there perpetrator will be captured. All parties were illegals, so not even sure if US has jurisdiction here.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

The shooter was in the country illegally, so he clearly didn't care about that law.

The shooter had possession of a firearm illegally, he didn't care about that law.

The shooter murdered people, he didn't care about that law.

No gun laws would have prevented this tragedy, but it's very possible keeping this individual from being inside the US would have.

He might not have known that... but one of the issues people are talking about is this might encourage vigilantes to go out and "take care of" undocumented people themselves... IDK. I hate when a story devolves from the actual crime and trying to create policies to correct the problem to word choice issues... But, IMO his choice to (incorrectly) paint all the victims as "illegals' and omit mentioning the status of the shooter is just not a great choice.

Gun laws really need to be enforced though... How was he able to access a gun?

Then in one of the stories it mentions the family had called the police 4 times and it took forever for them to respond because they lived in a rural area... Just a tragedy all around...

Maybe the gun was one of Obama's Fast and Furious guns.  That being said, there was a problem with the police response if they were called multiple times, knew his status and knew he had illegal firearms.  He should have been locked up.

As to the activists shouting this will lead to vigilantes, I doubt that happens just because of this especially since the shooter was illegal.  Think Chicago.

I don't know what gun laws could have prevented this when the guy obviously cared nothing about laws to begin with. The man was deported 4 times and arrested for DUI. If he faced no consequences for those actions we are only training him that he is invincible in terms of punishment. He never should have been in this country or at a bare minimum should have been in prison for his repeated prior transgressions. Allowing him to be in this country when he had proven himself to be a bad apple is a major factor in the deaths of those people. Laws not enforced are not respected. There is no legal way in which this man accessed a firearm in the US.
