I think each state is different. I currently opted for a Dental HMO that's only costing me about $17 a month, but I've such bad experiences with dentists here in California, I'm afraid to go. They're like used car salesmen out here.

My dental coverage is free at my new job.

It's with MetLife; the deductible is $50 for the individual (i.e. me); the dependent ortho coverage is 50% up to $1500 which isn't great but it's pretty standard, and the calendar year max benefit is $1500...which again isn't great but is pretty standard.

If you have kids and you want them to have braces, I recommend you start saving.

Not sure what I pay - I'd say it's in the range of $50.00 a month for the family. That's a preferred provider type plan (better coverage within the network) covering 100% preventive care, 80% basic, 50% major up to 3K per covered person per year. It has orthodontics covered at 50% up to 3K as well. But I agree with Steven, Dentists here are mostly horrible. The dental work I've gotten done here is nowhere near as good as the work I had done 10-20 years ago in Germany. Nani had pretty horrific experiences with dentists here too. We've changed her dentist twice already and are considering leaving her current provider as well. They just all stink. Nani says that there are better dentists in Ethiopia. That's an interesting statement, I think, considering that Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world...

We used to have delta with a $1500 maximum a year and a meager choice of dentists. Through my new job I had the choice for Aetna DMO or PPO. A really good doctor turned out to participate in their DMO program, so we signed up for that for $25 per month. There is no yearly limit and they pay for basic and prevention 100%, for everything else betwen 60-80%, and for orthodontia we have a copayment of $2000, they will cover the rest. It's really good.
