Hi everyone,

I desperately need your help and would appreciate any help you can give us.

My wife needs to travel back to her hometown.  And we have the extension in hand.  We are in the midst of removing condition.

My question is:  do we need to get a passport for her?

Thank you so much, everyone!

Where is the town? If you're travelling domestically in USA, there's no need for passport. A valid driver license or state ID (preferably REAL ID) is all you need.

If travelling internationally by air, all travellers need passports. US citizen needs a valid US passport. Green Card holder needs valid passport from their country of citizenship. Green card and extension letter are in addition to passport.

By hometown do you mean overseas? Yes, she will need a passport if she travels internationally

Of course she needs her Chinese PP

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Then obviously she would need a passport.
And she needs to make sure to also have her expired greencard and (unexpired) extension letter with her. If her passport and greencard have a different last name (in case of name change after marriage) she also needs to bring her marriage certificate to show her name change.

Bonus point. If she ever seeked political asylum from China she likely cannot go back to China without complicating future naturalization in the US.

I will add, make a few copies of the extension letter.  When my wife was traveling through Beijing with an expired GC and extension letter, the airline check-in clerk asked to keep a copy of the letter.  Luckily my wife had a few copies as she needed the original to present at US CBP when returning.

Does she not have a valid Chinese passport?  The GC/Extension letter will not get her on a plane for China.

Yes, she does.  But, will she need an American passport too?

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me.

Thank you so much, everyone!

This is gem and thank you so much for the reminder.

She cannot get that until after naturalization.
