Nursing Moms...exposing breasts

DEAR ABBY: A couple of weeks ago, some friends and I visited a family friend's niece who had recently had a baby girl. While we were visiting, we noticed that the baby was hungry.

Being a good mom, the new mother unbuttoned her shirt, took off her bra, and breast-fed the baby right in front of us. Abby, was it right or wrong of her to expose her breasts in front of visitors when breast-feeding the child? -- RACHEL IN PHILADELPHIA

...

DEAR ABBY: I was frustrated by the lack of empathy that "Rachel in Philadelphia" (May 23) seemed to have for nursing mothers. She's the writer who asked if a nursing mother was "right or wrong" to expose her breasts to visitors in her home.

When I first breast-fed my son, I discovered that the process is not easy. And I, too, sometimes "flashed" visitors in my first attempts to get the hang of it. It's hard to be discreet during the first week or so. Afterward, however, I became proficient, and my husband was wonderful at providing a burp cloth or another item to help shield me when we were out in public. -- PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

...

It never fails to amaze me how a society that participates in the viewing of violence, sex, mean-spiritedness and idle gossip as entertainment can become "outraged" seeing the act of breast-feeding an infant. It's time we got our priorities straight! -- T.P., MANISTEE, MICH.

...

DEAR ABBY: After I had my baby, my doctor came into my hospital room and asked if I was planning on nursing my baby. I said I was. He could see my roommate was listening to our conversation, so he asked her if she, too, was planning on nursing. She said no! My doctor, who was known for his frankness, said: "What do you think those breasts are for, sweaters? Nursing is the best way to go! The milk is always warm, and it comes in cute containers!" Needless to say, my roommate was speechless. -- NORMA IN HURRICANE, UTAH

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed a baby and I don't see anything wrong with it but it would not harm anybody if it was done with maybe a little more discretion like turning around and act like it's a private moment or maybe not at the table at the restaurant but again ask to use a table in the corner or isolated somewhere. I don't even talk about your own private home, you just have to go in the baby's room or your bedroom, telling politely to your guests that you'll be back after you fed that little baby. I can understand with family members but not with guests, it's rude to impose your nudity even if it's natural.

It must be again one of these cultural differences I don't get, I've never seen a Parisian woman just stop in the middle of the store and pop it out or expose her breast in public for that purpose. I saw a few feeding their babies in the train and they first covered their breast and then were searching for the ####### not the other way around. My friend that breastfeed always just go in another room or ask my help in public to hold the blanket while she gets the nipple in place even tho there is no censure, tits and nipples are seen on commercials, ads, magazine covers, movies, on the beach. Showing a little discretion is just a way to show your consideration for people around you, I guess.

I agree. I nursed all of my children and always used a blanket over me unless I was at home. However, I see women all the time nursing in public and I don't think it's a big deal. It's as natural as childbirth itself and the way God intended it to be. Yes, I do agree that some modesty should be used, but if not, I certainly don't think it's dirty or anything. Personally though, I would not let it all hang out in public. Nursing is very intimate and special, but anyone toting a baby around also is toting a bag filled with necessities including a blanket.

A LADY should use discretion . In public? No.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Peeing is natural but I wouldn't lift my skirt up in public.

...or pee with the door open if I had guests at my house

I don't think peeing is on par with breast feeding...unless you're R. Kelly. :P

As long as a woman isn't fully exposed, i dont see anything wrong with it. There are ways of being discrete with this. Women have been nursing their young since the beginning of time. Its only because our society is so strongly influenced by the church that we deem it to be unacceptable. Its like women being topless at beaches. Will never be accepted in America, unless its a private beach. We Americans tend to be more conservative than most countries when it comes to our flesh. muslim nations however, are quite extreme. Another church....hmmm.
