Multiracial adoption?

How do you feel about multi-racial adoptions? Would you consider adopting a child from a different racial background to yours? If not, why not?

DH says that we are 'NOT' a 'multi-racial family because we're both of anglo-origin and just from different countries... but as soon as I open my mouth people know I'm 'not from around here'. If we adopted a blond-haired blue-eyed caucasian kid they still wouldn't look or sound like mommy... maybe I'm prejudiced in the opposite direction because I've done my reading and I know how many dark-skinned babies are put up for adoption compared to the fair-skinned ones, and how skewed the ratio of demand is to supply... it makes me want to take in one of the children that the other couples didn't want and to give them a loving home. Why would it be so bad to give a little brown-skinned baby a good home? Am I just an idealist?

I don't see what the big deal is. If you want to adopt a child of a certain background/race/color/sound/handicap/whatever... you should be able to. As long as you can support the kid and all that.

DH says that we are 'NOT' a 'multi-racial family because we're both of anglo-origin and just from different countries... but as soon as I open my mouth people know I'm 'not from around here'.

My guess is the two of you have completely different ideas of what "race" is.

I would not have a problem....like Joel says...kids are kids. Doesn't matter the race or culture. They need love too. :)

A lot of it comes down to homogamy; we tend to prefer things that we have been surrounded with our entire lives and are similar to us. This is changing though and certainly doesn't apply to everyone! I've always thought I would like to adopt a chinese girl if I couldn't have children of my own or maybe even if I can have children of my own. It's so sad how they often get thrown away and I think they are so beautiful!

Funny thing is that if we all take a look at our backgrounds, there are a lot of us with very multi racial backgrounds and don't even know it. To look at me you would say......WHITE GIRL. :P BUT, my grandfather was 100% african american. I only got the crazy hair that I have to get relaxed with ethnic relaxers, not for the white girls :lol: Looking at my kids, my son looks very white, however my daughter has a few black features, but very white skin. So me, no....I would not think twice about adopting a child from another nationality. Khallid and I have actually talked about this a few times and he loves the idea too. Never know what the future might hold. Maybe in a few years we will have little ones running around the house! :thumbs:

I think it is a great idea to adopt a child from a different origin. You would be a pioneer in breaking down racial barriers. If hubby and I are unable to have children I'm fully willing to adopt kids from another country.

Actually, I still don't know what my race is.... :lol:

On my mom's side of the family:

her mom's parents: Italian dad (that spoke Italian most of the time and had a strong accent when speaking portuguese) married my Indian mom (whose grandma was a savage indian that was made a slave by the Portuguese people that discovered my State);

her dad's parents: German x Portuguese

On my dad's side of the family:

his mom's parents: Irish x Portuguese

his dad's parents: Italian x Spanish (linked to the Emperor of the Holy Roman-Germanic Empire)

My skin might be white but I carry a lot of different stories in my blood.... so no, I wouldn't even think about race when adopting a kid. :no:

My future child with Fely will be half Filipino and will probably have dark skin. I'd better not have any problems with having a child of another nationality. Blood or adopted, I don't see that it makes much difference.

All children need and are entitled to love regardless of their race. My husband is African American and our son is half AA(but looks latino) plus I have two white children from a previous relationship, so we have a rainbow of complexions in our family. In my opinion you can't help who your heart falls in love with. I've never seen a baby that I didn't think was beautiful and would have no hesitation in adopting a child of any race. I think the world could use a few more idealist like you :) Best wishes.
