I been looking all over (here and elsewhere) but I havent been able to find something i could bring to my local social security office, as USUAL, government workers are the most "untrained" people they could hire.

i went to my ssoffice since i got my green card so they will change it and take away the restriction that says "Valid only with DHS approval" that goes if i use the EAD.

the person that I talk to, told me that restriction would have to remain there UNTIL i become CITIZEN!

according to what i heard they should take the restriction off

no?

According to Phoenix Processing office they will take 5 months to process, lets see if they keep their "promised schedule".. (hahaha yeah right)

They were wrong. Go again. If the same person serves you and gives the same response--ask to see a supervisor.

Yes the SSA seems to hire bone-heads. Wait a few weeks after getting the green-card and then visit the SSA office again.

Are there different types of cards?

We issue three types of Social Security cards. All cards show your name and Social Security number.

  • The first type of card shows your name and Social Security number and lets you work without restriction. We issue it to:
    • U.S. citizens; and
    • People lawfully admitted to the United States on a permanent basis. (Green-Card holder)

[*] The second type of card shows your name and number and notes, “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” We issue this type of card to people lawfully admitted to the United States on a temporary basis who have DHS authorization to work.

[*] The third type of card shows your name and number and notes, “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT.” We issue it to people from other countries:

[*] Who are lawfully admitted to the United States without work authorization from DHS, but with a valid nonwork reason for needing a Social Security number; or

[*] Who need a number because of a federal law requiring a Social Security number to get a benefit or service.

I agree the SS workers are not the brightest. We went to get my husband's SSN after we were married on K1. They said we couldn't do it until he had EAD which everyone knows takes longer (usually) than the 90 window to get married. So, I looked it up online, copied the appropriate info, and went back. The SUPERVISOR told me that we couldnt' apply for a SSN on K1 status only with a green card. He said the info I had printed out was wrong and they had new policies. So, my husband's green card was just approved last week and we are finally going to get a social security card after all this time despite the fact that he was entitled to it a long time ago!!!!

Does anyone know if you could use the AOS approved Welcome Letter to apply for a SSN before the green card arrives? Just a question!

AOS approved 7/20/07!!!

in our case, i presented a print out i found on this forum where it says k1 are entitled to get a social security number,

they were giving me trouble but when i show the lady that even if she wasnt happy she gave me the card.

plus here (milwaukee, WI) in order to get married you NEED to have a ssc... we even call the national place (dont rem where we found the number) but the person in charge made sure my name was on the system (at first they say it wasnt on the system, we even talk to the poe officers and what not)

and then after marriage i changed on my new name and i had no problems...

but now they just didnt want to take the restrictions....

they are a pain...
