For this tax year and last, I have about $300 in income. My parents (who I live with) are willing to sponsor. Would they be household members or a joint sponsor?  What are the differences and what is the best option for us? Can you have a joint sponsor with someone you live with?

Use the higher earning parent as joint sponsor and the other parent as the joint sponsor's household member.  YOU are the primary sponsor with your own separate affidavit.  Your parent(s) don't need to combine income with you to qualify.

Thanks! Under what circumstances would I do household member? Since I live with my parents I'm scared I'll get an RFE asking me to change it to a household member, since I've heard of it happening.

I think what you've heard of happening is people who change FROM household member TO joint sponsor.  I gave the correct advice for the circumstances you described.  Carry on. 😉

Just got a RFE! It states that I was supposed to add my "joint sponsor" as a household member, NOT a joint sponsor.

I received an RFE to change joint sponsor to household member since we live together. I have no problem doing that, however, does that mean I have to re-fill and re-submit the I-864 since I didn't originally include my household member in the count of my household size or income? If so, how do I get them to let me edit that document?  Do I send an inquiry?

Also, my household member will be my mom who filed jointly with my dad. Should I include him as a household member also?

So your mom filled out a separate I864 as a joint sponsor?  If she is a household member, she could have filled out an I864A.

Yes, I was advised to do it that way by someone on here. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to be the right way. I will get her to fill it out and I 864a, however, does that mean I need to re-do my I 864? and how do I do that?  Also, should i have my dad fill out an additional I 864a?

Probably best to have them both submit an I864A, others may know more.  As to you, you would need to fill out a new I864 if you hadn't included them as household members in box 7 Part 5.

So i would have to wait for aother RFE telling me my I 864 is wrong? I couldn't preemptively change it some way?

Or, would I put it on "other document" in the document section

I would upload a new one in the other documents section.

Maybe that's right.  Why doesn't this person qualify as a joint sponsor?  It has to be something related to their financial qualifications or income.

This was my advice...Use the higher earning parent as joint sponsor and the other parent as the joint sponsor's household member.  YOU are the primary sponsor with your own separate affidavit.  Your parent(s) don't need to combine income with you to qualify.

But....the RFE mentions only one person.  What did you actually file?  Which parent is mentioned and why only one?  Something is missing here.
