Travel Allowance

I need to know from the people who have flown out of Lagos airport and gone through immigration if you are flying on a U.S. visa do you have to have a certain amount of money to travel called a travel allowance and if so how much is this allowance. Also will you not be able to leave the country without this certain amount of money called a travel allowance. I was told today that my fiance would not be able to get through immigration if he did not have this travel allowance. Gosh people the things you go through just to be with the one you love. To be honest this just sounds like a last attempt to bribe someone out of money.

I would not encourage him bringing any substantial amount of money with him. He can just carry enought to eat and stuff at the connecting airport. He is better off wiring any substantial sum.

I've never heard of this. I'm interested as well. I sent my fiance a Visa Debit card that already has a predetermined amount on it. I wanted him to be able to use it for food and to call me when he reached the US and passed customs. Now, that I have decided to fly him through JFK maybe I'll wire him cash instead. Kelechi, let me know if you find out anything else.

...aka no there isnt a travel allowance!

There is no such thing as a travel allowance. All he needs is his travel docs, and so small change for food in between flight from New York to final destination.

I think the pre-paid debit card is a good idea thanks for that one.

I don't know if anyone is concerned about excess baggage. When I travel for 2 or 3 weeks, I always have an extra bag that I have to pay excess for. Also some airlines allow 50 pounds some 70 pounds, if you go over the weight limit there is a fee.

Taking this into consideration might be helpful.

Other than that, pocket money for food and souvenirs at the airport.

I did some searching online and found out that there is no such thing as a travel allowance. But it is just up to each individual as to what they feel their SO will need. I like this about the card too.

I was going to do the pre-paid pin. But, I know how few payphones we have in my area some take coins some don't. To be on the safe side I purchased a Pay and Go phone with nation-wide calling for under $30.00 and a $10.00 card. My SO will use this when he touches down. The greatest thing about this is that I already know the number, so I can call him along the way.

I don't know about the Nigerian airports, but in Cameroon there is a 10,000 franc exit fee (about $20.00USD)... We had to pay it every time we were leaving... I always wondered what they would do if you didn't have it... keep me there??

About 90-100 and though it is not like having a contract as far as usage. But, you can migrate the number into a contract once they arrive, and that is what we plan to do. I think the prepaid visa is great especially if thaey tranfer in a another country or even if they have to transfer airport. They can use the Visa to pay for excess bagage, get a taxi, food and anything else needed for travel.
