Hello good people.
I am former J1 visa holder subject to the 2YRR. After my program, I returned to my country and served 15 months. I work for my country’s foreign service, so I was officially sent to the USA at my country’s embassy in Washington for a three month mission which I can clearly document. Now, my question is , will this period spent in the US count towards fulfilling my 2YRR?. I need help on this as I am soon scheduled for my immigrant interview. So wish to know how to plan things. Thanks

It's a pretty interesting situation, @Sally 90

I don't see many of those, so cannot comment with certainty.

Who sponsored your J-1, @Sally 90?  Was it your country's government? If yes, can you obtain a no objection statement from them?

Maybe you can consult with an immigration attorney to understand it better?

Another thing, you said 15 months in your country and 3 months in embassy. That's in total 18 months (if 3 months counts), still less than 24 months, which is required.

@OldUser thanks for your response. I am not in the process of applying for a waiver. I just wish to know if the time I spent in the US working for my embassy would count towards completing my 2 year requirement. I just don’t want to miss out on it and stay longer when perhaps it would have counted. My program was sponsored by the US. And yes I will try to seek counsel from an aty. Thanks so much
