I would like to find out about volunteer work in the USA!

Hi All

I moved to the US from England on a K-1 visa in June, we are now married and I am waiting for the AOS/EAD to be processed. Sitting round the house doing bits and pieces is getting a little boring now.......

I would like to get involved in some volunteer work. I'm not quite sure where to look to check whether it violates the conditions of my being here on the K-1 visa. I'm guessing it is OK, and if so, where would people start to look for open places?

As long as you don't get paid you can do voluntary work, that is fine.

Depending on your interests, I know around here they are always looking for greeters at the local free museums/libraries for the historical society. Something like that could help you learn a bit about your new area, meet new folks, and get out of the house.

Look on your local county's website, our's 'Fulton County" list all the local volunteer agencies.

Not sure how it goes with permission to volunteer though, Good Luck!

I think it depends on where you live. I live in a REALLY small town, but it's not extremely hard to find volunteer work. There is the library where you can volunteer to help sort books or read during story hour, the hospital where you can be a candy striper, the animal shelter, Boy's and Girl's Clubs, etc.

There are national charities that have local chapters in major cities, and they run a ton of events throughout the year that you could help out with. I volunteer with the Arthritis Foundation, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer foundation. It's a great way to meet people! Check out their websites or search online for the local chapters.

There are several organizations that use volunteers:

1. American Red Cross

2. Salvation Army

3. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America

4. You local Agency on Aging

To name a few. Check for local homeless shelters, nursing homes and local welfare department. Schools may also use teachers aides as volunteers. Just ask around...so many need assistance.
