Hi everyone! My fiancee just arrived from China about 3 days ago from the K1 visa. Everything went smoothly. Now I just have a few questions about the next process. I was wondering when the name changes can begin? The general timeline I have now is something like getting married, then SSN, then AOS, etc.

1. Tomorrow, we will go get a marriage license and a few days later officiate it. I was wondering if I still use her name on the passport (the pinyin English name).. and then later be able change it? Like saying during the SSN or AOS procedures?

2. When can we also change her pinyin chinese name to an non-pinyin English name? (ex. Shangjian Wang to say... Lisa Wang or something) Is this during the SSN procedure too?

3. And when these name changes occur, is there any benefit to changing the surnames? My fiancee is thinking whether to keep hers or change it to ours. We don't know the pros and con's of each.

Thanks!

The order of operations we took

  1. Entered the country.
  2. Applied for marriage license and specified married name.
  3. Married
  4. Received marriage cert.
  5. Took marriage cert, passport, visa, I-94 card, and got SSN in married name.
  6. Visited civil surgeon and got vaccination record (Yellow book from GUZ) transfered to supplement.
  7. Filed for AOS

In our case my wife had no middle name so her middle name is now her family name. In most states name change is accomplished when filling out the marriage license application.
