My friend's husband has been working for the last 8 months in another country, using a temporary visa he has been diligent about renewing during this time. He is concerned about knowing if he were to take a residential visa there will affect his application for his US residential visa?

The biggest impact would be a change needed in which consulate would eventually handle the spousal visa application.  Other than that, it should not be a big issue overall.  He will need to get a police report from the country he is currently in.
