Mother in law coming next month to USA on B1 tourist visa from Vietnam. Any recent arrivals can tell me how long the officer at port of entry (POE) gave them to stay in USA? I would like her to stay until August so that she can travel back with my family. We're going on a one month vacation to Vietnam in August. Is it advisable to write a short letter that she can give to the POE officer requesting a 4 month stay so that we can all travel back together?

Round trip ticket with date to leave US covers this

we had a 3 month  stay bought with round trip but CBP  marked she was allowed 6 month stay

make sure whatver the CBP marks MIL leaves  so she is out of US by that date/  weather can delay planes and it is not acceptable / don't leave that day/ plan to leave day or 2 before

I am going to assume she will seek entry under B2

Her return ticket will be a bit of a clue as to how long she wishes to visit and she will be asked.

You can't do that..the letter, that is

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Thanks

Return is August 20th

I would guess she will get the entry period needed to do that.  Really doesn’t sound like she plans to overstay, and having a return ticket with a concrete plan for a family vacation is very sound planning.
