Removal of conditions + Replacement of Permanent Resident Card when expired

Hi everyone. I received my green card today! As I’m reading the information that came in the mail, I have a couple of questions:

  1. I’m a lawful permanent resident (CR1 category). My understanding is that I have to file for Removal of Conditions in the 90-day window period before my green card expires (which is 12/12/24, correct?) Please see attached. We plan on filing i-751 mid-September, 2024.

  2. I read the i-751 is taking a while to get approved (literally more than 1 year these days). In the meantime and while in the process of getting approved, do I have to apply for a replacement of my green card? Or, how will I be able to work, travel, etc. with an expired green card? The Information letter says: “If you are a permanent resident, the expiration date does not affect your status, but you should use Form I–90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card to apply for a new card as early as six months before your card expires.

Thanks in advance for your help

1. Correct.

2. No, you won't apply for a replacement card. Once you file for removal of conditions you'll receive a notification letter that will also serve as an extension. Currently that letter extends the GC for 4 years after the expiration date - and as things are, by the time you file it might be a 10 year extension-. 😜

@Allaboutwaiting Thank you so much for your response. Yeah, I heard things are going terribly slow with the removal of conditions... One more question: Will the extension letter arrive soon after I file thr I-751? (I read you can't file I-751 online).

Usually comes within few weeks, can take up to 6 weeks.
