German identification number!

alright so in the past i've noticed alot of questions about what this ID number is so my fiance called the embassy and they said it is the number on your drivers license! so if anyone like myself will be receiving package three in the near future or even later i hope that this is helpful to you!!

Oh! I read on another board that this number doesn't exist for Germany and so I put "none" or "n/a" (don't remember). Hahaha, dammit!

But they didn't say anything!

That's bizarre given that there are 3 different driver's license formats, and the numbers change when you exchange or lose your license. As Natashabrenda pointed out, many Germans don't have a license and would thus not have a number which is somewhat weird considering the way in which the government here keeps track of things.

Also, since Germans and foreigners living in Germany are registered by birth date, place of birth, and name, rather than by numbers which change according to documentation consulted, that explanation sounds fishy. I just had my interview and I was not asked for any numbers by anyone, except for my phone number. My police certificate does not have a number attached to my name either.

As I've said before, Germans don't have national identification numbers except for a social security number which is used for that purpose exclusively.

Edit: I also called one of the numbers for the consulate (the 0900-number) and their information turned out to be wrong in any respect. No offense, but those people are not employed by the consulate but by some third company and except for having the power to grant interview dates they have no clue...

You can't just put any random number in an official document just because it's on another official document. An identification number is the same on any document and it is attached to your name for eternity. Neither the number on your driver's license nor the number on your perso meet those criteria.

By your standard, you could also put the number of a student ID in the field or the number on your vaccination pass.

Fischköpfin made some good points in this thread and I fully agree with her.

I guess it's true, we just don't have a national identification number. I didn't have any problems (at least so far) with putting none or N/A in that field.

Again, there is no national ID number in Germany. That's also why the DS-156 says:

"National ID number (if applicable)." Germany: Not applicable.

well my fiance called the embassy and thats what the officer told him. but i guess it isnt that important if they didnt say anything to people who didnt fill it out. i dont know thats just what he was told

that's right. All numbers on your Perso, your passport, your driver's license change when you get a new one. they do not identify you, they identify the document.

For germans, the right answer will be n/a. The 0190 number is total bullcrap. they have no idea, I tried to ask them several questions and the answer to each one was "I don't know. We do not have the answer to this question". And they questions were easy ones like "how long is the medical valid?" or "what which affidavit of support do I need for K3?" (that was long before I needed those answers of course)
