Hi friends,

I'm a Canadian citizen with a Nexus card issued in 2019, but I'm presently living in the USA in a H1-B visa.

Can I use Nexus as a Global entry equivalent while traveling within USA? Or should I apply and get another Global Entry card?

Secondly, can we use this Nexus to skip the line while entering into the US from Mexico?

You do not use Global Entry while travelling within the US.  It is used when traveling to the US from another country.

Maybe you are asking about TSA Pre-check?  I think Nexus has that as well - look for a known traveller number on the back of the card.  You just need the number - that card itself is not needed.

For express inspection travel to/from Mexico, you need a SENTRI card.  I believe, as with the NEXUS card, all travellers in the vehicle need their own SENTRI.

If you have updated your visa information on your NEXUS account or had your information updated at an Enrollment Center or sent the information to CBP, yes, you can use NEXUS just the same as Global Entry.

As stated above, travelling within the US does not require a trusted traveler program.  You can use your DL if you like.  Just make sure you have your passport/visa information with you as you can be asked for it.  This is especially important when you are driving in border cities where there may be CBP checkpoints.  California has a number of them.

NEXUS card can be used in SENTRI lanes (as long as everyone traveling has NEXUS of course), but only if the vehicle has been preregistered under the account.

Thank you, I'm crossing by foot in the landborder, so no vehicle involved.

You are right. Yes I was referring to TSA PreCheck while traveling within US. Thanks for confirming, I'll use the 9 digit number.

Thank you. I have NOT updated my Visa info in the Nexus profile. I didn't even know that it can be updated.. I don't want to schedule any interview with them because it takes so long. I'm interested in the alternative you mention, ie. sending the info to CBP. How do I send the info to CBP and ask them to update this in my profile?

You don't need an appointment to update info at an enrollment center, you can just drop in. Also, as others have said you can ignore Global Entry since NEXUS already includes all benefits and more, and you would not be eligible for plain Global Entry anyway on H1B status.

Also, at least for US-issued NEXUS cards you login in here to update profile info: https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov - however only some of the info can be updated online, other things need to be done at the enrollment center, and in some cases additional info needs to be emailed to the Canadian side.

This might work differently for Canada-issued cards though...

Well, I actually went to an enrollment center yesterday. Here is the full story. I was an Indian citizen and Canadian Permanent Resident, when I got my Nexus card. Later on, I became a Canadian citizen. I wanted to update the passport number in my Nexus profile.

I used the ttp.cbp.gov website and created a "change my profile" for whatever its called. It created a case entry in the status 'conditionally approved'.

I called CBP and was asked to drop in without appointment, to get these changes made in my Nexus profile. The problem is that since I initiated that process online, and the conditional approval confused the guys at the enrollment center.

The enrolllment center said everything is good and I'm good to leave. But I still have the same old Nexus card which shows info about my indian citizenship..

I did a similar thing just the other week, changed from US LPR to US citizen - had to show my naturalization certificate and passport at enrollment center on US side, also had to call a number on the Canada side, then a CBSA officer called back and gave me an email address to email scans of the same documents to update citizenship in both systems.

With that done I went to the TTP site and requested a replacement card with "Citizenship update" as the reason for replacement, costs $25 for the replacement. Waiting for the new card at the moment, should arrive any day.

That's interesting. Looks like they might ask me to send documents by email, and then I might have to request a replacement card also. Hopefully sooner than later.

Once the TTP profile page shows your Canadian citizenship (it will probably show both Indian and Canadian in your case) you should be able to request the replacement card - the replacement process page will confirm which citizenship the new card will have before you proceed.

BTW, these are the phone numbers to call for updating info on the Canadian side unless a Canadian officer already took care of it for you at the enrollment center:

Submit high quality scans.

When we showed up at the Blane, WA Enrollment Center, the lady took all the info and updated it on our profiles (my kids also have NEXUS and their renewals are pending - we had to update passport for Kid2 and add PR for all 3 of us).  We discussed Kid1's passport coming due, so she told me to take high quality scans and send them to CBP.  I recently did this through the CBP website.  I haven't heard back yet to verify it's done, but hopefully it is.

This was an email I got from them about a different inquiry:

Thank you for contacting the CBP Traveler Communications Center.

The Trusted Traveler Programs will only allow you to apply for one membership at a time.

The NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing into both the United States and Canada through dedicated processing lanes at designated northern land border ports of entry, at NEXUS kiosks in certain Canadian airports and at Global Entry kiosks at designated airports for entry into the U.S., and at marine reporting locations. Approved applicants are issued a photo-identification, proximity Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) card.

NEXUS is the only trusted traveler program that provides US citizens and LPRs expedited entry into Canada.  Participation in NEXUS also provides US and Canadian citizens and U.S. LPRs full access to Global Entry Benefits as well as TSA pre check.

If you do not see the option to switch programs on your TTP dashboard, you will not be able to switch programs. However, you have the option to request cancellation of your current application, so that you can reapply for your preferred program.

Please note that the application fee is non-refundable per the terms and conditions of the program. If you still wish to cancel, please reply to this email. Please continue to log into your TTP account to check the status of your application.

The Trusted Traveler Program is a voluntary program that offers expedited customs clearance for those who submit to background investigations. It was promulgated through the rulemaking process and 8 CFR 103.7 stipulates there are no refunds, because fees charged offset the program costs associated with background investigations. These were the terms and conditions that you agreed to prior to payment.  Unfortunately, a refund cannot be processed.

Thank you again for contacting the CBP Traveler Communications Center.
