New Haven Becomes First City in U.S. to Offer ID Cards to Illegal Immigrants

Let's see...local towns can't pass laws to bar illegal aliens from renting, working, etc. because it infringes on Federal jurisdiction. But towns can pass laws to freely choose to aid and abett illegal aliens against Federal law. Groovy!

Where is the ACLU on this one? Probably with their heads up their liberal lunatic fringe arses as usual. The silence is deafening.

The Feds raided New Haven once already since this abomination was passed...I hope they make it a regular routine. Better yet...nail the local politicians on aiding and abetting charges.

How is it aiding illegal immigrants? An ID card doesn't grant a person any additional rights. You don't get any additional rights when you get a state ID. You do when you get a drivers licence, but thats now what the city gave in this case.

Anytime a government entity gives anything but emergency aid to illegal aliens it is defacto encouragement to illegal aliens. In this case it is an ID card for services. Sounds like aiding, abetting, and enabling to me.

Since when do local towns get to formulate immigration policy? They sure did b*tch, whine, and moan when the Feds raided their town and hauled off a load of illegal aliens recently. Maybe they should focus more attention on the local citizenry instead of trying to make obvious Lefty lunatic statements by passing lame laws and proclamations that encourage and embolden illegal aliens and illegal immigration.

What services do they now get access to that they didn't have access to before?

oh yaaaaaaaay slowly give them the rights they want but dont deserve

What rights? In the US you don't have to be a citizen or resident to own property or assets in the US.

You can own property here, but you're not guaranteed access to your property if you're not a citizen or permanent resident.

Thing is, New Haven can't deport people. They don't (and shouldn't) have the power to. They're not formulating immigrartion policy. They're saying, pretty simply, we think this measure makes it easier to run our town and keep it safe. ICE can still run raids, and the Senate can still sort out immigration reform. In the meantime, New Haven's trying to get itself to be a better town and community trust of the cops is one way to do that.

(Again, aiding and abetting what? You can't just have general abetting.)

We do have a sizable Hispanic population here, and the mayor is betting that being more welcoming, even if it's just a gesture, will help with policing in the city. I don't expect that many will apply for an ID card, really, because most illegals try to stay under the radar. But if it makes people, legal or otherwise, feel that the cops are on their side (basic community policing), it can really help this area recover.

I have a new title "New Haven officially run by the world's biggest dumb ####.." We also obviously need these illegal immigrants since the US economy is do so well.

To the contrary two counties here in N VA have just passed the opposite laws.

The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution yesterday that would limit illegal immigrants' access to county services and penalize employers who hire them, becoming the second county in the region to adopt a hard-line position in the wake of Congress's failure to enact immigration reform.

One week after Prince William County (VA) officials took a similar step...

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Not only the ACLU. People in other posts have been hammering the apparent link between violence and poverty in America. So why are they not protesting against such amnesty considering illegal immigrants are stealing jobs from the poor.
