CR1/IR1 - Maintaining Employment Canada

Hi All,

I have a quick question surrounding employment after your CR1 is completed. I am currently a Canadian citizen employed by a Canadian company.

Once my visa is approved, am I able to enter the US and activate it and then return to Canada if I am not ready to move?

My hope is that once I am approved, enter the US and then return to Canada for 2-3 months to continue working and close the loop on some items.

Wondering if anyone has done the same and/or has any advice?

Thanks!

Probably.   If longer than 180 days file I-131 to get a Re-entry permit.

You just need the stamp in your Passport

Thanks to the both of you!

@Mike E I read through that thread, what a wild ride, the Hacking clip was the cherry on top. 1000 Islands will most likely be my POE so may go the long way to Buffalo instead.

I understand now that my case is not unusual and that many Canadians return to tie up items. Is there any information that’s been shared related to taxation and how this would work for those 2-3 months after I obtained my CR1 and worked from Canada?

There is a double taxation treaty but let your Accountant handle that. Hopefully you will not owe anything. Selling property.   Seems the one to avoid

Reached out to an accountant this afternoon so hopefully get a response on that.

Thanks to the both of you for the quick responses and explanations!

U.S. taxes are lower than Canadian taxes and the U.S. has a foreign tax credit (each dollar of foreign tax you pay offsets each dollar of U.S. tax you owe).   So worse case you pay the higher of the two tax rates, to Canada.  That’s the simplest DIY solution.

Better to fly to the  USA for the first entry to activate your LPR status.
