USPS return to sender

In the worst twist of fate, instead of delivered my replacement green card went from "Out for delivery" all day to the next morning "Awaiting for delivery scan" to not long after "Return to sender". Once USCIS gets it back, what happens? Do they try again? I do not know why it wasn't delivered, calling USPS to try to intercept it led to nowhere and USPS also just had the info from the tracking number nothing else to add. I was home for the delivery too, even though it wasn't needed as all USCIS mailings go into the mailbox no signature required.

 

I have to laugh at this point at my absolute terrible luck because otherwise I'd start screaming.

That is aweful... Did you change address?

Did you have USPS Informed Delivery enabled and showing the mail arriving?

 Nope, same address since filing AOS. It did not show up on Informed delivery which I thought it was strange (and already thinking something's wrong) but I kept checking with the tracking provided by USCIS.

USCIS might destroy the card.  Try reaching a Tier 2 officer for possible assistance.

It's not but it never needed to have it - I just got my ROC receipt not even a month ago, same with all other correspondences.

 

Already talked to USPS at three different branches, it's in the "return to sender" purgatory until the next time it's scanned manually, which might take more than a few days.

If i were you i try to talk directily with your mailman , sometimes they do mistake and keep the mail in their truck. That happened with a check that my husband was waiting, and when the guy checked in his truck , he foud others mail that he forgot delivery to our address

Already talked to anyone at USPS I could, from mailman, to local post office, local distribution center and general customer support.   It's been a week and neither USPS nor USCIS have acknowledge the returned mail. USPS does not update the "return to sender" to anything else after that as far as I could understand it - it won't notify me when it gets back to the sender. So I can only wait until USCIS sends me the notice of returned card and requests info on how to resend or something. A never ending purgatory of waiting.

I'm not sure I ever heard about USCIS attempting re-delivery of GC or other documents. I think you would have to file I-90 with fee waiver eventually if the card was mailed but never got to you.

From what I could find online there are cases USCIS receives the returned mail and sends out a notice "your mail/card has been return due to ____ (I don't have a reason for my case yet). It also contains the language that card will be destroyed if you don't update your address/we hear from you in X amount of time. I can't find the screenshots now but it has happened. Now, it my returned card will make it to USCIS and they will acknowledge it, that's another issue.

And the question is, will the card be re-sent even if they hear from you.

USCIS often (usually?) can't find either butt-cheek with both hands plus outside help...

Short update: after trying my luck with different agents online, one of them saw the "Return to sender" on the tracking number and immediately started the remailing process. Got a service number for that, expected delivery in 30 days. I can only hope this will work.

 

Long update: I tried to ask for a remail before but they would ask for me to wait until the card was back at USCIS. Kept pestering USPS people until 3 service requests later they finally said it was lost or damaged in transit so it was never going to go back.  It took hours of phone conversations, 4 different physical offices visits and lots of stress to get to this point though. And in the end the latest USCIS agent didn't even asked for proof of anything 🤣. Just true luck of the draw on these things, let me tell you....

I believe there was something wrong with the address but can't know for sure as the forms were fine and I'm never going to see the original mailed one. The agent did confirm my address on file and was correct too so 🤷‍♂️

He also warned me this time it will be signature required and if no one is there for the delivery USPS will leave a note and hold the green card at the post office for 10 days to be picked up. After that, it's send back to USCIS. But IT WON'T BE!!!! I will literally work from my front porch the entire day when it shows up on my informed delivery!!!!

However, lawful permanent residents and conditional permanent residents must always file Form I-90 to request a replacement PRC.[8] In some cases, USCIS would not require a new fee.[9]

There's a saying in Texas:  "His dawg ain't sleepin' all the way under the porch."

(Meaning, he's nuts, incompetent, beyond help, et al.)

Sounds like most of those clowns at USCIS & USPS ain't sleepin' all the way under the porch.
