You are unemployed, so you don’t need to provide current income

More correctly, your most recent tax return IS your evidence of current income.  It is not INCOME until it appears on a tax return. Before that, it is just revenue.  Income is revenue minus expenses.

That said what you do is respond in writing and in email to remind them that your self employment does not result in either W2 or 1099 forms.  This is not uncommon, but you must remind them.

You will need to write a separate statement for you and Joint Sponsor explaining there are no W-2 /1099 for either, yours due to unemployment and his due to self employment.
Your self employed Joint Sponsor will keep getting rejected unless he has submitted proof of current income / business license or DBA. That means a Profit and Loss ( usually by tax preparer ) to substantiate net income for 6 months and bank statements for 6 months that show the deposits/gross revenue.
***You will face this issue at Consulate even if you get past NVC****

So have your Joint Sponsor do that or try to get a W-2 employed Joint Sponsor.

You indicate you are living overseas, so prepare evidence of Re establishing domicile

In my 17 years here, and my own hands on experience (extensive) I have never seen or heard of a Consular Officer asking for anything but the latest tax return, from a self employed person.  Certainly, one could provide such items as suggested above or his quarterly return, but I've never heard of it being asked for and never advised any self employed person to provide any of that.

Also, it is my experience that when a document does not exist, it is not required.  That's general, but definitely would apply to ME as a self employed person.  I do NOT have any W2 or 1099....EVER.  USCIS and Consular Officers take you at your word, that if you are willing to declare direct income and pay taxes on it, you "earned it".

Yes, but there are multiple transcripts available from IRS.  What is required by NVC and/or USCIS is a Tax Return Transcript, not any of the others.

I live abroad. How can I get a tax transcript? I belive it is asking for U.S phone number, credit card number when you first sign up. Which I do not have. Also does it have to be signed by the IRS office once we print the transcript

Since I live abroad, can I sign up on the irs website? I watched a tutorial and it is asking for U.S phone number or loan information, U.S credit card info which I dont have since i am away. Do they really ask these when signing up?

PLEASE HELP!! I received Case FE requesting mine and joint sponsor's w2/1099. I live abroad and only received stimulus money so NO W2. Joint sponsor is self employed, doesnt have W2/1099. We both submitted 1040 form. Each time we message NVC it is sending a generic message stating to send what it says on the NVC message. It is frustrating bcause we keep explaning them we dont have w2 and the reasons in the email and all they do is send a generic message. They dont even mention to send tax trancript, which many did when they dont have w2. What should I do?? Should I just upload a note to NVC documents under mine and joint sponsor's of why we dont have it and submit that in hope that they will aprove it?

you were advised by @Crazy Cat and @Family that you need to submit a letter in place of where it’s asking you to submit W2 explaining why you don’t have W2/1099. This is different from emailing or sending public inquiry to NVC.

No, that is not the reason.

Do as you were advised or you will keep getting the same message.

Thank you for your help! Yes I will definetly write a letter and explain to them. The joint sponsor does not need to write it seperately right? Only I write it and I sign it? It does not need to be notarized, correct? @Family @Crazy Cat

we filed our 2021 taxes in January 2023. Could that be the reason they don't see it in the system. How long does it take for taxes to be processed?

When did you file 2022 tax return?

Hi, I know that for ir1 visa they ask for the past 3 years for sponsors taxes. My question is what if the sponsor started working only this past year? And didn't work in the past years. She is single. How is is calculated for a total of 2 people (my husband + sponsor).

Then the person is not eligible to sponsor.

I filed 2021 taxes two months ago. I filed 1040 tax return. I requested my tax return transcript and recieved that as well. My question is does the transcript need to be signed by the IRS office ("certified") or can I upload it as is. I attached an example of what my transcript looks like below
