I thought we had compromised on 75", but when we got back in the store it was suddenly 85" again. We have a 65" one at the moment which seems well-sized for a living room, but he says nope, that is going in his study and a bigger home needs a bigger set. I said his money, his choice. We have a 52" one in the bedroom now and it is a great size. Really hoping that in the new place there is NO TV in the bedroom.

This is one thing me and the wife agree on, no television in the bedroom.

I don't understand how a marriage can survive without a TV in the bedroom. :P

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm sure you were all waiting for an update... We selected a hood and it is arriving on Wednesday, along with the induction range and the fridge.

Now we have moved on to different, equally thrilling dilemmas, like which toilet will we select for the powder room. We have narrowed it down to two, and just waiting on the contractor to tell us whether we need a 10" or a 12" rough in. We have a definite aesthetic for the powder room -- dark fantasia, aka the GothBog (as my husband calls it). We already chose a black sink to go along with the Benjamin Moore Salamander paint (walls, ceiling, and inside the large walk in closet off the GothBog). After briefly considering a gold toilet (!) we decided to match the sink and have a black one, too. Next up: choosing a suitably witchy mirror.

House is looking great -- kitchen cabinets are partly in, counters are in, all the floors are finished throughout the house, all paint is done (except for touch ups). Bathrooms have showers now but no sinks yet. The "basement" has drywall up, and the cement floor goes in this week. Laundry room and the new "basement" both have utility sinks. Still need to finish the fireplace in the master bath, still need to get ceiling fans up in two rooms. Still need to get built ins in both the studies (mine are considerably smaller). Shooting for mid-April still, fingers crossed!

We also found a vintage console long enough (90") for the 83" television which is in my future. I bought too many rugs the other day.

Basement construction shot from the middle of last week -- MUCH further along yesterday when we were there:

You should paint the walls a color darker than black, then paint the ceiling black to lighten the room.

Also, your pic isn't showing.

Also, also, isn't the cement floor spoda come BEFORE the walls?

It got split from the induction stove thread, where you convinced me that that was the way. Ordering the craft ice maker separately too!

Do you mean Vantablack? https://www.surreynanosystems.com/about/vantablack

Walls went in first because there has been considerable work involving re-routing pipes beneath the earth floor. Getting walls up sooner allowed for the workers to keep at it instead of having them around idle. The floor had to be dug out to the tune of over 10 tons of dirt. We were the only unit of 4 not to have a finished room there. It adds over 200 sq ft to the property, which is great. Currently we are planning on it being a hobby room.

My contractor is amazing -- great communication, great work ethic, great finish. No complaints at all. He trained as an architect in Panama before he came here, and it shows. He's also very affordable. My broker introduced us -- he'd redone my broker's kitchen and bathrooms so I had a personal recommendation.

Ahh, gotcha.  I need to get on with my project of replacing a propane stove top with induction.  Been putting it off too long.

Makes sense on the floor now.  Since it's a basement, have ye considered a sand base with tiles over the top, as opposed to cement?  If cement is THE choice, make sure you have a good drain system.  Flooded basements are NO FUN.

Did you get the ice ball maker yet?  Those things are truly things of beauty.  I'm sure Alex will appreciate it.  I make several batches and store them, but beware, they shrink over time as the defrost cycle happens.  And takes about 30-36 hours to make 4.

We are having an excellent drainage system put in. We have had a very rainy winter, so leaks have popped up that needed to be dealt with. It kind of focused our minds that even though we may be moving to the Valley, anything can happen. Our contractor recommended cement over tile for our house, so we will see if we regret it!

Ice ball maker will be ordered to arrive after the fridge comes tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up about shrinkage -- it makes sense, but it never would have occurred to me. :)

heads up about shrinkage

People can walk out of California stores with $950 or however much of stuff without prosecution (retail shrinkage).

This reminds me of those comment cards in restaurants (rate the food, service, et al.).  Under "Is there anything else you'd like to add?" I write, "Brazil is experiencing severe economic problems."
