I arrived in the US and applied for an SSN 2 weeks later, got the one that says VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION (or something like that) on it.

When filling out the i-485 I checked the box asking if I want them to issue me an SSN (and also included my SSN whereever it asked for it).

Because I want the card without the DHS text on it.

But I also checked the same box on the i-765 "Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security card?".

Is there any harm in having done this? Will they just send 2 new cards if approved? Or as filing together only issue one?

The wording can only be removed when you have a physical GC in hand.

You filed your I-485 & I-765 wrongly. You already have a SSN.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Correct. This should save you a trip to SSA to get an unrestricted SS card.

And that would have happened automatically if they requested a REPLACEMENT SSN card on the I485 application.

Now they'll have to waste their time and go in person to SSA.

I find the answers very confusing. Should you or should you not check the boxes?

1. You could have checked the boxes

2. You didn't have to check the boxes

3. Checking the boxes MAY have saved you a trip to SSA if they actually followed through and sent a new card .. hit and miss

4. Your SSN remains the same. Go to the SSA with your paperwork and get an unrestricted card issued

Okay noted. Thank you!
