Spouses filing N400 together - paper or online?

Hi,

I'm preparing N400 for both my spouse and myself (5-year rule). Should I file the applications online or by mail?

I'm thinking I need to submit by mail (send two applications together in one envelope) so that they get processed together and we'll do interviews together... With online, I have to submit two separate applications and they'll get processed separately with different timelines. Is that right?

Can you also advise what supporting documents I need to submit? I went through the checklist and it seems like I only need copies of green cards and marriage certificate. Sounds too simple that I'm worried I'm missing something.

Thanks,

Jenny

I'd do online as it doesn't matter when each of you get processed - you're independent of each other. You can flag it at interview your spouse is also naturalizing to slot you together for oath ceremony but I wouldn't be expecting you'll be slotted jointly for interview.

I recommend online application.  It's pretty easy.  Just make sure you don't apply on the first day eligible.  I would wait a day.  Good luck.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

If you do  paper, and send them together, don’t assume two applications will be processed.  At best one might be processed. At worst neither will be and maybe USCIS will keep your money.

Most new hires at USCIS start off on N-400s and most of younger are younger and prefer online.

5 - faster; N400's are usually very easy with 80+% being easy to approve. Most paper applications are earlier and take longer.

6 - Depends. Newer ISOs - online digital. Veterans - maybe paper
