I still wonder all the hype over the IoT.  Is a connected refrigerator, garage door opener, electric locks, thermostat really any better than their unconnected counterparts?  What is the benefit?   I only read the Wired article where they seem to put the blame on the lack of security, but they really don't answer the question posed in the headline.

I was not big on wifi connected anything, but two years ago I added a connected thermostat to my place in the Keys.  It has been great.  When I am headed down I lower the temp to a nice temp so that when I arrive it is comfortable.  Also am able to monitor humidity when I am not there to be sure the dehumidifier is doing it's job.

You know a humidistat that is not connected to the interwebz does the same thing, right?  Well, the humidity part, not the cooling it off on the way down part.

Sadly, I am stuck with a non-digital system, and cannot install a web-capable thermostat where I live.  But I dream about it from time to time...

I went on a test drive in a model 3 performance today. Fairly impressive.  Took a second to figure out how to open it and start it

Fairly impressive?   Did you push the pedal more than halfway to the floor?  I test drove a base model 3 over two years ago and was blown away.  Have since tested a Y performance, and it was even more amazing.  Would love to test a S performance, but since I would never buy one, feel too guilty to ask to drive one.

Other than the acceleration, I was not impressed.  I have a friend that has the 3 performance and we took a ride over to Miami a while back.  Did not ride well as it is too stiff.  Rear seating is horrible.  Too upright and minimal foot room.  Certainly not a luxury vehicle but you pay a luxury car price.

Yeah, that is one big drawback in Teslas in general for me.  Very harsh, and plasticky feeling inside.  Plus the performance ones have been having problems with suspension and wheels, I hear.

When their price drops by half, I might consider buying a cheap quality interior at a fair, cheap price.

Some additional eye opening facts about EV raw material extraction.

Workers Are Dying in the EV Industry’s ‘Tainted’ City

A decade ago, Labota was a fishing village; today it’s been subsumed into a sprawling city centered around IMIP, a $15 billion, 3,000-hectare industrial complex containing steelworks, coal power plants, and manganese processors, with its own airport and seaport. Built as a joint venture between Chinese and Indonesian industrial companies, it is at the heart of Indonesia’s push to supply the electric vehicle market with nickel, a core component of batteries.

Rocketing demand for electric vehicles, combined with supply disruptions caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have made Indonesia—and IMIP—a critical link in the supply chains of EV manufacturers. That's especially true for Tesla, which has signed multibillion-dollar deals with companies at the site and is reportedly in talks to set up its own manufacturing facility in the Southeast Asian country.

This was a .model 3 performance.  I was not driving.  Did you know you can make the horn sound like flatulence.  That was impressive

This one was a model 3 performance. 2022 with 6k miles. 54k Seems like a lot to me. But looking around that seems to be the avg price in the area. The guy that looked at ours was also looking at one about an hour away. Same exact car but 12k miles and it was 51. That seemed to be the cheapest in the market.

Gotta compare them to a similar ICE car, like a Camry.  NOW how does that price tag look?

Absolutely.  Now there are those that will buy a performance EV for the fun, just like those that would buy an impractical Lambo, Porsche, or Bugatti, but for the everyday purchaser, the business case has to be there.
