Electric vehicles more expensive to fuel than gas-powered cars at end of 2022: consulting firm [merged threads]

For the first time in more than a year, owners of traditional gas-powered cars saved more money at the pump than those driving their electric counterparts, according to a consulting firm.

As inflated gas prices came down at the end of last years, the fuel cost for most Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles was comparatively cheaper in the final quarter of 2022 than charging an electric vehicle (EV), analysts with the Anderson Economic Group (AEG) said.

The cost to drive 100 miles in a gas-powered car dropped by more than $2 in October, November and December 2022. And with electricity prices rising last year, mid-priced ICE cars became more economical than EV cars for the first time in 18 months, the firm said.

Saw that.

Regardless of facts, we must all be officially compelled to buy & drive EVs.

Gas prices where I am are nearly back to peak, thanks Joe.

They have introduced a much more complicated electricity pricing structure and I can see people using their cars to store by charging when it is cheap and drawing from the car at peak. But ignoring that where I am it is about 1/3rd the cost to use electricity.

The report but with no numbers.

And fossil fuels are still the highest source for fuel for electric plants  (61 %)  according to government

From the report:

Findings by Vehicle Type • Mid-priced vehicles−In this market segment, fueling ICE vehicles was more economical than comparable EVs in the 4th quarter, regardless of charging primarily at home or commercially.

100 miles is 25kw on average - $4 roughly

That would not buy a gallon of gas here.

Not arguing that, just pointing out what the report said.  And as more EVs are bought and charged, I suspect the cost will go up due to the strain on the grid.  But that's just my opinion.

especially in some states that have onerous building restrictions and environmental hurdles to jump through for new power plants.........

I think I have mentioned that in the UK you have to use a separate meter now for new car charging outlets, you can guess why.

Not only that, but electric utility companies will start readjusting rate periods since most EV charging is done at night where currently the rates are lower, I think the rates will normalize fairly quickly.

What is a new power plant?

what i want to know is how do they bring places to charge a car when the area often floods?

The following is totally riduculous

That is ridiculous.  And in cold climates, people are learning that charging has its issues.  The biggest one is chargers simply not working in extreme cold, to the need to pre-heat a battery (won't charge if it's below a certain temp), ensuring one HAS enough charge left to properly warm the battery, etc.  Not to mention reduced range (up to 41% less in the cold).  And more frequent charging stops.  I read an article about a guy who drove 2,000 miles in a model 3, and had to stop 18 times to recharge, but kept the total charge at 50% or less for faster charging.  That's an average of a charge every 111 miles.  Not very efficient IMO.

And then you have the stories of flooded EVs in Florida after the hurricanes this past year.  Catching fire unexpectedly after being under salt water for a while...  Yikes!

I guess Tesla had to buy flood insurance.
