Joint sponsor

So I am going to need a joint sponsor. I know 3 years of tax return is required. We have a family of 6 so  I think $46k is the required income we need to have.

1) Do you also have to include the sponsor's household size? for example my parents if they sponsor would we have to meet income requirements for 8 or just our 6?

2) Does my income for each year add to the joint sponsor income? So for example if we need income of $46k but I only made $20k and the joint sponsor made $30k would that suffice or does one of us have to make at least $46k?

3) Does the joint sponsor have to be family?

4) Can you have more than one sponsor? Like both my parents on a joint return

5) My dad's income is from retirement, social security, and a side business. Will this be a problem? What documents will he need to provide?

Best to read the form Crazy Cat kindly linked, there is no way of answering your question with the information supplied.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

I will note that typically, your household size is not added to the household size of the joint sponsor.  Certainly the US Citizen is not added.

Yes, become an A-Student of the instructions, but the Joint sponsor's household size would be what it plus only the immigrating members of your family being sponsored.

Example:  A couple with no children, dependents or previously sponsored immigrants, who is sponsoring your spouse, would have a household of three.  Study those instructions carefully.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have had conflicting advice from others online about household size. Does my joint sponsor need to make enough for my household size and my spouse and her daughter or does it need to be the joint sponsors household size and my spouse and her daughter? So for example there is 4 in my house plus spouse and daughter for a total of 6. My joint sponsor household size is only 2. Would they need enough income for 4 or 6? Thanks!

Your joint sponsor's income requirement is for their own household plus only the immigrant(s) they are sponsoring, and any immigrants they may previously have sponsored.

Neither.
3 is the answer: his household size plus the intending immigrant. Your spouse doesn’t count for this one.
Additionally, your spouse will still be your main sponsor, so he needs to fill out another I-864

The OP is a man.  His wife has a daughter immigrating, so there are two intending immigrants to add to the joint sponsor's household size, in terms of the income requirement, but the affidavits themselves will both show one less, as neither immigrant has been sponsored yet.  Consular Officer will apply the correct income requirement.

Yes, the OP/Petitioner is the primary sponsor and provides an I-864.

Gotcha. I thought that only OP was the beneficiary, as in “my spouse and stepson are already USC”
