Hello there,

is this the right room to ask if my father as a green card holder may get some benefits like cash? What benefits can he get from government during 5 years till he becomes US citizen? Is there any way he can apply for citizenship sooner than 5 years considering his age?

thank you

afshin

No cash benefits. The petitioner  signed a financial support document for this very reason. Citizenship requires 5 years of LPR status unless the GC was obtained because of marriage to a USC spouse

Plenty of places employ seniors   .. employment brings income

Thanks lil bear for quick response… but he is 88 year old now and he is barely able to do his personal daily things with a lot of helps… I just thought there may be some kind of help or exceptional expediting his 5 yr rule to a shorter period which seems there is not any based on your knowledge?!
thanks…

Correct. No shorter time period. Petitioner commits to financial responsibility of the immigrant. This is not a new rule ..  immigrating later in life brings way more challenges and expenses  than we usually expect or foresee .

Who petitioned for him? This person should financially support him, that’s their responsibility.

Thanks for responding… I did… I am his son… but  I need to continually take care of him: feed him, walk him, give his medicine and so on so forth… I can’t leave him alone because of his general condition… I thought there might be some kind of help for this hardship….

Nope. Not for LPR.. and honestly many many USC families face the same hardships. you may find some community based charity support but its not likely to be much if anything.

Maybe look into hiring a caretaker who can help with his care?

That is a good idea … but then I have to pay most  part if not all my own income to the care taker! Beside , considering his special needs I doubt if there is any helper could take care of his separation anxiety… he has fallen two times so far and got lost in neighboring…I was not able to work because I can’t leave him alone …I heard there are some programs which family member could be a paid caregiver himself… but couldn’t find any so far! I think he needs to be US citizen before he can use any of these benefits…

You are in a hard place   I know elderly parents bring heavy loads. Hope you are able to see it through. Unfortunately he wont be with you forever .. but there are also limitations to what you can do. Not easy choices

In your other post you also ask about him being able to travel back to his home country for longer periods How would he do that at his age and in his condition? How would he manage there? Does he have a stronger support system ‘back home’? Maybe bringing him to the US wasn’t necessarily the best option?

He doesn’t have anyone back there because my mother passed away. He is not able to go there by himself but we need to go together there at least once a year to take care of his medical issues since it is cheaper there and he doesn’t have health insurance here…

So dad likely has his Iranian pension and the challenges of getting those funds across can be tricky. If he got lost, disoriented and may face issues with English in the next 4 years ( when he’s eligible for N-400) ..you may have a tough road ahead.
Perhaps look through your local community …there are always postings for people in need offering household work in exchange for free room and board…or even Senior Day Centers .
