05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

The ROK is not far behind.  I have a colleague from the ROK that has four children, and he and his wife are described as rich.

Rich in descendants, or rich from the payoff for producing descendants?

Rich as in being able to afford to raise 4 children.

Well to 'fix' this problem.. if it is really a problem, the country would have to make fundamental cultural changes, and I don't see that happening. So while the government can complain about it, they will do nothing to actually 'help'.

Actually Russia has similar issues for the same sort of reasons as do many other countries.

 

Now the consequences are both challenging and not easily resolvable. Japan has been heading this way for 40 years at least, this is not a new story.

 

Societies seem always to have a way of destroying themselves. Sometimes many ways.
