I strongly suggest your wife consider filing the N-400.  It worked in our case. Check my signature below.

48 month extension is not just an embarrassment, but a colossal failure.

It's time to get rid of the 2 year ROC process and stop wasting resources.

It’s an embarrassment to us given we are the paying customers, but to the government, that does not pride itself on customer service, it is a cash cow.

Who are these people who are getting 48 month extension? People close to their 2 year mark or just about everyone?

Recent filers so far. E.g. we got 24 month letters when we filed, they got 48.

Interesting - where are you seeing that? I'm hoping I'll get mine soon then as I filed first half of January and received 24 months as well.

I mean people who receive extension letters for the first time, who just filed. Sorry for confusion.

I'm frustrated that we didn't submit our application just a couple weeks later than we did, although we couldn't have known. Our receipt date (January 11, 2023) was a couple weeks before the 48 month letter was announced, so we received the 24 month letter.

We know a couple who have been going through the ROC process for several years now. Their extension letter expired (back when it was a 12 month version) and they never received any updated extension letters in the mail from USCIS when it became 18 or 24 months.

I know USCIS claims they will be sending out the 48 month extension letter to all pending ROC applications, but what are the chances of this actually happening? It seems like it has not happened for all applicants in the past when extension letters were extended further.

I'm in the same boat as you. From what I've seen it'll be a case of either filing N400 to hopefully be done before my 24 month extension expires, or calling them 60 days before my current extension expires to get a new (hopefully 48 month) letter. I'm guessing that they may start sending 48 month letters out some time in the next 4-6 weeks, based off of how long it took them to start sending the 24 month letters to people who had received 18 month letters.

I filled in December 2020, got an 18 month extension, then a 24 month one.

All organised to go and get a stamp in my passport next week for an extra year.   Extremely surprised to receive a 48 month extension letter today!

Guess they aren’t just for recent filers.  Now to phone on Monday to cancel my appointment on Tuesday 🙄. Good thing the post didn’t get delayed! Lol
