Good calling cards for the Caribbean?

Well, I've been using Union Telecard cards for a while to call my fiancee (in Trinidad), but their rates spiked recently :/ It's still nice to buy it online and use it right away, though.

Any cheaper options? Something other than cards even? Something like VOIP seems redundant since I don't really want to pay for a home phone on top of my cell, though.

If your fiancee has a computer and Internet connection you can call for FREE using Skype. It's awesome, is clear, and best of all you can talk for hours not worrying about how much it costs.

AOS approved 7/20/07!!!

We've tried, but she can only get dial-up in her area, and it's quite slow even for dial-up :/

And for those who use calling cards try the western union it gives ~8 cents a minute to land lines and ~32 cents a minute for cells. You can recharge it over the phone.

but the Jus Talk from C&W gives 5 cents a minute and you can use it to call Ja from here or they can use it to call here from Ja. Your SO can recharge this card in Ja

The sprint card from CVS is good but you have to make sure to buy the international card. It gives 16 cents a min to both land lines and cells. You can rechard this over the phone too but if you do it in the store you get 10% free.

None of these cards steal your minutes. If you use 5 minutes it takes 5 minutes not 30

Good luck!

^^^those rates are for jamaica but I'm sure it's comparable for T&T

you can call them and find out

Empress can you buy the Jus Talk card in the US and/or online? Is the .05 calls for calls to JA cell phone or landline only? We have the megaphone and also uses the Sprint Int'l card which is wonderful. However ... .05 cent is a better rate. I am looking for something to get for David's immediate family once he migrates to the US too. So if it can only be bought in JA we still may be able to use it at some point. Thanks!

Hey Jenice

I'm not sure if you can buy the jus talk in the US, but I doubt it. My dad was the one who told me about the rates I believe it's 5 cents if you call from here but it's still really cheap to call here from ja. think we got 15 minutes out of a 100 Ja card. If you call them up I'm sure they can give you more concrete information. hope that helps

Western Union: $.18

Jus Talk: appears to be available only in Jamaica

CVS: $.16

Still can't beat the $.11/minute I'm getting currently, I'm afraid. Thanks anyway :)

Hey, I found another cheap one! Has anybody used Phone Card Mania cards before?

The rate is *really* cheap...a little bit too cheap, actually. I'm kinda wary about trying it out :/ I can't find anything too fishy on their site, but I'm worried about hidden fees, etc.

Also, some more research: BBB reports an unsatisfactory rating for the company US Prepaid Telecom - which I found by running a whois on their domain name. But then again, so does Union Telecard, and I've had good service from them (haven't deal with their support, however).

I just read in our local paper about Charter Communications starting some sort of international 250 minute a month calling plan for $20 a month. No connection fees or hidden charges. Trying to tap into the growing immigrant population. Haven't really looked into it; but it sounds like something I might.

I use 3U Telecom....17 cents a minute for us. Can't be bothered with purchasing calling cards.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

3U is 17.9¢ per minute for us - still more than the cards. And I like the cards - they prevent us from being on the phone for hours, wasting too much money ;)

And Charter isn't in my area. My local phone/cable companies charge insane international rates.

Thanks anyway! :)

I use Lingo to call my family in T&T. But it costs 14 cents per minute.

My parents also have only dial-up in their area which sucks, but we do have a pretty good connection when we chat using headsets on yahoo messenger.

I use Vonage to talk to mi amor in Argentina. For us it's only 1 cent per minute though.

To Trinidad is 14 cents per minute. I don't know what your past rate was though. That's in addition to the 24.99 Vonage charges per month though.
