Egg prices have gone crazy high

What are eggs going for in your area?

I recently looked at the prices in Edwards Cost Plus and for a messily dozen eggs they wanted 8.99, in Central Arkansas

I need to check Kroger and Walmart the next time I'm in there.

We have chickens so egg buying has not been something I've done in the last 5 years. I am raising the price of eggs that we sell. I was selling them for $3 a dozen but feed has gone from 16.99 to 22.99 in the last few years. I don't buy the cheapest but also the not the most expensive feed. I like the result of nice big eggs that taste great.

All my hens became feed for racoons this summer 😢. Eggs in SW Missouri are up to $5 dozen.

Oh my goodness. That really sucks.

We went through the coop last summer to inspect for week spots. A racoon was around way too much. Are cheap coop from Tractor supply was showing it's age and one got into that. So we moved them all into the big coop and doubled checked it.

I'm going to go around and check out the prices. I thought maybe $4 a dozen but that still may not cover feed costs.

Yes it was a hard loss .. i have spent more time away from home since mid may at my daughter's in TN .. grandson born in June with Cystic fibrosis .. 3 older brothers at home .. huge load with his medical care .. and I had the dog with me .. so our normal deterrent activity level around the coop was non existent .. the netting over the top was the weak link   Using up the 10 doz I preserved in lime solution when they were super laying before i have to resort to commercial purchases

That's rough all the way around.  I know a lady who has these huge barrel drums she put eggs in them i think with lime. Is that the same as glassing them?  It might be what we need to do if things keep going crazy out there.

Lime and glassing are different processes. Lime is easier .. just a supersaturated mix of “pickling lime” in water … glassing uses a silica mix .. my 94 yr old mum recalls her mother preserving eggs in “ water glass”. I haven't tried it .. it is apparently much longer lasting .. but the limed eggs are fine in the 10-12 months i have had them in the liming solution .. must be fully submerged, tightly packed so they dont move and crack and never washed before preserving. So when its mid west wet and muddy its more difficult to get clean eggs. The yolks seem to thicken a little so i couldnt use them for meringue.. i always float them as i take them out if the hat.. and check for smell .. occasionally one us cracked and not useable … but other than that they are great

I keep meaning to look into those, but so far I haven't had enough to save. The first year before I have too many customers, I froze some. That was ok but the yolks don't stay runny if you want fired eggs or something. I just used them for baking and that was ok.

$5.19 a dozen here in the Phoenix Arizona area. I work for a national grocery chain and before this last year we regularly had them on sale for around 99 cents a dozen. It's getting so bad here that last month I had customers asking me if they could just buy 2 or 3 eggs instead of a dozen.

I think they were about $6/doz last week at the regular grocery store and they were limited purchases to 2 doz.

Which was better than the week before, where I ended up getting 4 six-packs of organic free-range whatever eggs at $3.50 each (so $7/doz) at the organic-ish grocery store in the same plaza as the regular grocery store, and that was the cheapest variety they had in stock. Cashier mentioned lots of people coming in to buy eggs; I said "yes, the regular grocery store doesn't have any".

Last I saw they were trending down. We'll see if it's cheap enough for me to think it's okay to get enough eggs for a birthday cake (there's a recipe I'd like to make but needs 8 whole eggs and 6 yolks, and I already got some of the stuff for it, but that's a lot for eggs).

I think, mostly due to CA's cage-free mandate, they're normally like $3/doz here.

That is just crazy. Yesterday the hens gave us 6 eggs. Today the temps have dipped to 'feels' like 42 so I'm not sure we will get a good number again.
