Read the instructions.
Page 9 says that the applicant has to list all children, whether they are alive or deceased, minors or over 18 years of age, adopted and stepchildren. Then on page 12 it says that for the interview you’d need to bring the BC of kids listed. So yes, you’ll have to get those BCs….

Why was citizenship denied?

Ah instructions. Don't know why i didn't think of that. I guess I assumed the online application would give explanations to why things are needed.

Exactly.   I don’t know why people are surprised that  USCIS/DOS looks at family pedigree info throughout the immigration process, right up to naturalization.

I am more surprised by the fact that people want to DIY, but then they skip reading instructions and then freak out when they make mistakes.

In some straightforward cases, immigration can Be DIY but as Pushbrk likes to say, you have to be an A+ student in all the forms.

Read the instructions. Read, read, read.
And together with the instructions, the USCIS policy manual

I certainly don't disagree, but I am amazed by the number of people that think they need to submit all the documents asked for the N400 that are on the list to bring to the interview.  The N400 instructions show what is the required evidence to submit the application, and what is needed for the interview, but people are so worried about uploading or copying the interview material for the submission.  There is no need to do that, but they do need to gather it together for the interview whether they uploaded or submitted it initially.

That’s why I said that the applicant would need them for the interview

Immigration can be confusing.  Heck knows I asked some DUMB A** questions during my journey.  I was always glad to have this site to help me navigate.

OP. good luck to your mom.  I hope it works out for her this time around!
