Hi, I have a question to those of you who have had your interviews yet. Did you need to bring your foreign passport to the interview or ceremony? Or was the green card + state ID / driver license enough? I will be renewing my passport soon so for a few weeks I won't have it, and if they schedule my interview during that time, what am I supposed to do? Reschedule it for later?

Can you wait on renewing your passport until after the interview?

I don't believe it's needed for ceremony

Some countries make it much more difficult to renew a passport if you decide to update it after an expiration date. For Russian passports, for example, you need to prove your citizenship first before being able to proceed with a new passport application. It just complicates things. I hope it's not the case for the author and he can wait. I agree with you that it would be the easiest option.

That's good to know, thank you.

@mark08 can also confirm whether old passport will be taken away. When I renewed passport last, I kept the old one. It just got invalidated by cutting a corner.

I just had my interview this week, and I brought two passports. The one that I used to first enter the US 4 years ago that is now expired, and the new one that I just got earlier this year. An officer took both, scanned them, and then gave them back. In your case, maybe you can request a paper from your embassy saying that your new passport is in the works and they took your old one? For Russian passport renewals they never take away an actual passport that's why I don't know how common it is not to have it during renewal. In any case, would be good to have some sort of paper that you can show if your interview and passport renewal overlap.

Did they give your foreign passport back?

Wife took her foreign passport to the interview.  The officer wanted to see the ADIT stamp she had gotten.  Yes, they gave her passport back. They have no right to keep it (Some people need their foreign passports when they enter their home country).

Thank you everyone! Yeah I would definitely prefer to renew my passport a few months before it expires. But I did just read on the official gov website that they just invalidate the old passport (punch wholes or cut the corner) like @OldUser mentioned, so I'll need to confirm its the same when renewing though the consulate/embassy but it should be OK. If USCIS is fine with receiving an expired/invalidated foreign passport then it should definitely be sufficient. Thanks!

The primary reason USCIS needs the passport is to see any stamps / visas related to your US immigration.

The passport doesn't have to be unexpired or valid when you show it to IO.

Good news from the San Francisco office. Filed at the end of January.  Unfortunately it is not a combo interview.  We are still stuck on Fingerprints since July 2022.

Interview has been scheduled for December.

Almost at the end
