Re-entry permit pending for 15 months. GC is expired. Will I still receive it?

I am currently overseas with an expired green card, but prior to leaving the states I submitted a re-entry permit.

I am expecting it to be finished soon because the estimated timeline is at 15.5 months, while I have been waiting for 15 months.

My greencard expired back in september, and I was never able to get an i551 stamp prior to leaving to states.

Could I still expect to receive the Re-entry permit, or will they deny it because my conditional GC (and also the extension letter) is expired?

Hello!

Yes, submitted August 2020

Sorry, missed the reference to the extension letter also expired.  Here is a thread that may help with someone in the same situation.  A couple of options.  Try to get a boarding foil (I131a) at the nearest US Consulate which is $575, or fly to Canada or Mexico (if this is possible with your foreign passport) and cross the boarder by land.

I don’t think the re-entry permit is meaningful as it is tied to the validity of the GC.

Good Luck!

I see that they were forced to get a boarding foil to travel back. I think I should have added that I am ok to wait until my re-entry permit came back, especially since I already paid and I will be covered for 2 years from it's issuance and the timeline is almost completed.

I was more-so wondering if the re-entry permit would still be issued given I have an expired conditional GC, or if they would never issue it and I would be waiting for nothing?

I saw some conflicting information online. Some sources say as long as you get a reentry permit, you are golden. Others say that you cannot get a reentry permit for either: On a conditional greencard, On an expired conditional greencard.

Just a lot of conflicting info that confuses me.

This sounds exactly as the story in the thread below. All the dates match as well.

Thank you, I will send them a message and see if they came to a conclusion that could help me.

Yeah, I think the re-entry permit is a non-starter since your GC and extension letter is expired.  What country are you from?

Ah no way, that really sucks! I was hoping it would come in to save me since it's almost completed.

I am from Okinawa, JP

Then you might be able to do the same thing the poster did that @powerpuff referenced.  Fly to Guam and get an I551 stamp.  Maybe @Mike E or @ositakl will weigh in.

Good Luck!

Just the act of applying for a travel doc is presumptive that you intended to return.  Hopefully you completed biometrics and kept the receipt?

Nah we had one expired two years before we came home, it was helpful in demonstrating that our 4-year absence was temporary.
