Looking (expedia.com, cheaptickets.com, etc.) for airfare between BKK and IAD (Washington Dulles Int) for late-August/early-September - a one-way ticket from BKK to IAD costs MORE than a round trip ticket between IAD and BKK  ???? Anybody found a way to get better airfare prices to go to BKK and bring your lady back to the US?

EVA Air has flights from BKK to LAX for $604, thye don't have any flight all the way to Dulles but I'm sure some of their partner airlines do.

I will be coming back to LAX on Sept 16th on Eva Air, let me know if you need any assistance getting your fiancee throught POE at LAX if she is on the same flight.

BTW, just checked the flt for the 16th and looks like there are only 3 seats left for economy.

You are better off buying a round trip ticket. One way tickets are usually always more expensive. I was planning on heading over there in September or November but with work, I would only be able to stay for like one day. Probably would be worth it though so see her.

There are a few consolidators I've looked at online that deals with trips to BKK:

http://www.justfares.com/newjustfares/default.aspx I just tried this site after looking at Orbitz who's cheapest flight was $1200. This plays quoted me at $700 (tax not included).

http://www.bt-store.com/ This one gave me a price of $778.

http://www.consolidatorwebfares.com/ This one was $998. I usually see better prices from here.

http://www.airlineconsolidator.com/reserva...s_airfares.html This place is usually pretty good, but pretty high this time. Only flights I could find for me were through Malayasian Airlines for over $1200.

This guy sometimes has good prices: Willy Julnipithawongse, Phone: Toll Free : 1-800-USA-ASIA, e-mail: willy@usaasiatravel.com website: : http://www.usaasiatravel.com

These prices were for travel from the 31st of August to the 2nd of September.

The two cheapest that I have found for the six times that I have gone in the last 10 months are Eva Airlines and China Airlines. Don't go through a page like Orbitz or Expedia, they charge a fee. Just go straight to the airlines website. I just check a round trip ticket from LAX to BKK on Eva for September 8th and returning on the 16th and it was $830.00. I also found out that if you use a travel agent in BKK they get better prices. Here's a link to some BKK travel agents. Send them an email or some even have websites that you can check tickets on yourself. When I was in BKK two weeks ago they had a one way ticket from BKK-LAX for $500.00. The cheapest I could find it online was in the $600.00 range. Good luck. Ken

Thanks all ....

The cheapest I have found so far is $795 round trip IAD to BKK (China Airlines - before taxes - subject to availability - purchase by July 31 - travel between Sept 5 and Nov 30) on angeltravel.com. I have never flown China Air, every time I have gone to BKK has been on UA (I even got a free round trip ticket last December because I've done that trip so many times I earned enough miles). The cheapest UA flight I can find is $930 (before taxes, etc. etc.) or if I wait till off-season October  the prices drop to $840. What boggles my mind is why a one-way costs as much if not more !!!!! The math just don't add up.

I use Washington Dulles also....

Note: ANA Nippon and Korean Airlines are the only two airlines that fly NONSTOP from Asia (fly over north pole). It costs more, but flying nonstop from the Asian gateway city directly to DC, without stopping in another North American city, makes a BIG difference.

Good Luck

April through August is pretty much the off season as far as Thailand is concerned. After that, you will see a pretty good increase in ticket prices up through December and January.

Nate, I travel China Airlines quite a bit to both China and Thailand. There service is excellent and they have always been ontime. I have probably flown on them 8 times in the last year. Don't forget to check EVA airlines. They are usually cheaper then China by a little bit. I fly China Airlines because they are a partner of Delta which is the airline I use in the USA and where all my miles are. It's worth paying a little extra to get the 16,000 miles for the trip.

Ken I know what you mean ... I pick up at least 24,000 miles every round trip to BKK with UA now, and they code share with Thai and ANA so any air travel I do on them gets added onto that also. I use Star Alliance for all my other business travel, so every third or fourth trip to BKK ends up a freebie, so I suppose if you amortize that into the tickets I do pay for, the cost comes way down. With Nid in the US I am sure we will be making that trip a couple times a year so she can visit her son and mother.

The nonstop UA flight from Washington DC to Tokyo is a Polar Flight also, and those 777's are MUCH nicer planes then those old 747's. UA also has a direct flight from Dulles to Beijing now, so someday they might just reach to Bangkok.

Thanks for the good review of China Air, I will check out their prices (even tho I am not a big fan of Delta). I can't make it to Nid's interview, but I definately DO want to personally go get her and bring her here to the US with me, on the same flights. Thanks SqdnGuns for the offer, I really do appreciate the offer.

The difficulty I am having is that if I purchase 2 round-trip tickets, but the flyer does NOT show up for the first half, then will the airline or TSA have a problem with that? I guess I could be on the safe side and puchase a round trip for Nid from BKK to IAD leaving on the return date for me, and have her return date to BKK be 3 months later ????

I guess that their prices are only cheap if you get them for flights out of BKK. I'll be looking in to that though when it's time for her to come.

Nate, why don't you try to purchase a one way ticket for her when you get there? That would be an option.

Like I just posted elsewhere, with a trip originating in BKK, don't ever use one of the US based sites like orbitz or expedia, have her buy the ticket at a bangkok travel agent (khao san rd is the cheapest). For some stupid reason round trip flights are cheaper than one flights, WITH AMERICAN AGENTS. Elsewhere in the world this is totally not the case. If she buys a one way ticket in Bangkok, from Bangkok to the US, it will be cheaper than a round trip flight.

I'm trying to figure the best way of doing this. I plan on going there either for her interview or after to bring her back. Obviously I want her on the same flight coming back so I'm not sure if it's wise to buy my ticket here then buy hers once I get there and pray we are on the same flight.

I agree with Jamie76 that you should not buy tickets from the US, whether online or travel agents. You should buy from one of travel agents in Bangkok. I asked a friend of mine who is a travel agent in Boston, and he said the price is 1050 USD. So my wife bought her ticket from local travel agent going from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to Boston for 700 USD (one way). It's cheapter to buy from local, that's the bottom line.

Good luck to you.

Thanks .. you have a particular agent on KhaoSan Road that you can recommend? Would they be able to get a decent, cheap round trip for me also from Washington DC to Bangkok so that we will be on the same flight coming back to the US?
