Crossed over in Mexico and needs a sponsor.

I used to date this Russian woman. Very nice woman. But we are no longer together.

However she has a grown son that decided to come to America via the Mexico route. He got caught and sent to detention in Massachusetts. He was told he needs a sponsor.

Is anyone on here familiar with this type of situation?

If so what is a sponsor? Or a guarantor? What is required? What needs to be done?

Is this a lot of responsibility?

Thanks

Short version is that he needs a Lawyer to handle his Asylum claim, does he have money or is this something you will be taking care of?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

He has some money. He is not a criminal. In fact he owns a legitimate small business in Russia.

I told his mom that he needs a lawyer also. I also asked her to send me the lawyer's contact info so I can ask him questions.

A bit odd, suppose they could ask for a bond but with 14,000 a day whatever I thought they were just sent on their way with a master court hearing date.

I said asylum as what else could it be.

So he does not have a Lawyer? Immigration Law is Federal but this would be a situation where he needs a Lawyer where he will be living and deals with that Court.

I am still learning more information. But it does appear he has a lawyer. And he has a friend that promised to be his sponsor. But then found out the friend does not have a green card either.

This is all new to me.

And yes it does appear he is requesting asylum.

Well it appears that he is trying to get political asylum and needs someone to vouch for him. Someone that is a resident or citizen of the USA. I am a US citizen but I currently dont live in the USA I cannot do it.

I think he needs a lawyer. But his mom tried to contact one and they asked $5500 dollars to handle the case. Its too much money for them.

He is a good person and can do productive work. But I think they are going to deport him without a sponsor.

Do you know anyone who might have some advice?

I tried clicking on the link on this page about ask our VJ Immigration Lawyers. But it only offers the service it does not actually have a button to get in touch with anyone. I was willing to use the service but it doesnt seem to work?

Maybe someone knows an immigration lawyer who can help answer a few questions?

Asylum claims do not need a sponsor.

There are no end of NGO's that can help, but still think a good lawyer is the best bet, I know most Asylum claims need help.

Do not know what the going rate is, I would have guessed around 5k.

Two knowledgeable firms (to which I have no connection):

https://www.fosterglobal.com/services/
https://quanlaw.com/our-services-2/

I used the Foster firm years ago.  They had (check to see if they still have) a highly affordable "ask our lawyers" option.  Years ago, it was $125, and I got far more value than what I paid.

Try either firm, and please let us hear how it turns out, because others will surely want to know.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I contacted Foster Global. I didn't see an ask a lawyer feature. But they did have an email.

I will let you know what they say.

I just looked and didn't see that feature, either.  But they're excellent, certainly.  They were, and might still be, the largest immigration-law firm west of the Mississippi River.

Gordon Quan (principal partner of the second law firm that I suggested above) used to be with Foster's firm.
