Im a newbie and this is overwhelming. Thank you so much to those who responded to my earlier posts. You all have been helpful.

I have a separate question tho: What is the difference between doing online vs paper application for N400? Can anyone share their experiences? What do you recommend works well (faster response, ease of application, etc)?

TIA!

other than n-400, i usually tell people to file everything by paper. but i helped people to file n-400 online and actually it's very breezy situation.

i guess the difference between paper and online : with online u will get the receipt letter immediately or a day after while paper, u will have to wait 1-2 weeks ( i dont think that's a big issue ), and with paper, u can fotocopy everything before u send it so u have documentation that u can go through later on.

paper vs online wont give you faster interview date if that's what u ask for

We recently filed my wife's N-400 online.  It was easy.  Received the receipt immediately.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

We chose to do apply online for the following reasons:

  * No chance of docs getting lost while in transit

  * You upload your docs, so you don't have to worry that you forgot to make a copy of something before you sent it.

  * Able to view all the docs you uploaded, so there's no question as to "what did I sent them"

  * If you get a RFE for anything, you just upload for a faster turnaround/response

To each his own. The whole process was very smooth and user-friendly for us when we went through the N-400 process.

Good luck!

Even filing by paper, the applicant still sets up an online account, so they can respond to RFEs, etc. using that account.  I would generally prefer online, but my wife chose to file by paper, and it was fine.  Btw, even if you upload all the interview evidence per the N400 instructions, you still need to take paper copies to the interview.

Essentially, work on your file starts about 1 week earlier if you file online. Your receipt and biometrics (if re-used) is issued almost instantly. By mail things take 4-5 business days to reach you.

Though a minority of people face difficulties filling the form online due to technical reasons.

However, once you have the receipt, you can add it to your list of cases after which both tacks operate the same.

The only caveat I would add to online filing is be patient and do not submit an application immediately when the window opens up.  There is at least one story of an application being mis-dated by the USCIS IT system(s) causing a headache for the applicant.  File online is fine, but wait a day or two after the window opens.

Just filed N400 online for my wife in November. tried a few days earlier, but system was down, after they fixed it it was really easy. Notice received instantly, biometrics reused notice the next day, and petition switched to USCIS is processing your case almost immediately. Did an I130 online last year, and that process was also easier than by paper. Online made it easy to enter travel dates, upload paperwork and documentation as I already had everything scanned in, I would definitely do the online version.

I'm a mail filer. Sent via Fedex signed for. Received hardcopy NOA1 18 days later. Biometrics were reused. Interview scheduled 4 weeks after NOA1. I filed via mail due to income waiver, no other reason. Would have loved the convenience of filing online but it doesn't seem to make any further odds - as Dashinka stated, you have an online account, and you'll still need to print the entire file off for interview, regardless.

Filed online, quick easy, uploaded evidence with no issues, printed out receipt notice in minutes after filing, uploaded additional evidence shortly before interview, printed out appointment letter almost 2 weeks before arriving in the mail.

I found the online system covenant and easy to navigate.

Do not file online too soon, wait a few days after windows opens to file your n400 online.
