My green card expires march 3rd 2023, I applied Jan 2nd and it was delivered Jan 5th. I received the NOA1 today in the mail (dated 01/20/2023 )with 36 months extension. I fear my Employer may not accept the NOA1 if asked. I remembered they requested for valid documentation when my EAD(employment authorization) expired back in yr 2021, so I tendered my Green card since I had received that before my EAD got expired.

I had read somewhere that I could use SSN card + DL. My challenge is that the SSN card given to me in year 2020 had valid for work only with DHS authorization. How do I remove this restrictions?

Your advice will be well appreciated. @Rearviewmirror @OldUser @Rocio0010 @beloved_dingo @Fe.Ta @Caitlin Kennedy. To anyone with a resource/link . kindly give your input. Thanks

Go to a social security office while your green card is still valid, and ask for a new SSN card. They will then give you a new one that doesn't have those restrictions, which you can then provide it to your employer if asked, together with a driver's license or other form of state ID.

Alternatively, you can go on the social security website, and request a new SSN card online. You will then visit your local office after doing that, make sure to bring your green card with you when doing so, and you will get a new and unrestricted SSN card.

Go to your local SSA office and apply for the number to get updated.  You could do it online, but it requires you to mail in your GC, which no one would recommend to do.  You can do the form online, submit it, and then go to the local office (I did ours the same day) or you can fill out the paper form while you wait in line.  Just make sure you fill out the form specifically saying that you are updating your card not that you need a new SSN.

You can find the local office here:

https://www.ssa.gov/locator/

I would do it now before your GC expires.  There are states that won’t let you do it if you are close to the the expiration date (i.e a week or days).

I'm actually doing this today. I filled out the form @Fe.Ta recommended online, so hopefully it'll be a pretty quick trip to the SSA. I'll report back once I'm done. One thing I read is to hold on to your old card in the interim rather than surrendering it if you can.

If I recall correctly, they didn’t keep ours.  Also, if your office has two sides or offices, you need to ask which one you need to go to for updating the card.  It varies by state.

Good to know. Hopefully my state doesn’t request to keep.

If they do, you will only be without it for 2 weeks.  Just make a copy of it and have a copy of the form to have while you wait.  It will show what the card looked like and why you no longer have it but that you applied to update it

Fill the application via that, but don’t do it as a mailed-in.  Just fill the application and it will ask you to bring everything to the office.  No need to print the form, just bring your personal documents - it will tell you what to bring.

All done. Very easy if you fill in the online form - although I had to wait 2.5 hours for basically 90 seconds of actual interaction with the SSA agent. Luckily I will never have to do that again.

I saw a mention somewhere that the cutoff is 1/25, so they should just have started sending out longer ones this week. Mine hasn't arrived yet but I have a feeling it'll be one of the last 36 month ones.

Less than a year until N400 time for me anyway - if only they made it 3 not 2 years initially lots of us could skip the I751 entirely!

You cannot skip I-751 when you have conditional card. N-400 cannot be approved without I-751 in this case.

I know you can't right now, because the I751 has to be filed at the 2 year mark and the N400 at 3 - but when the I751 (now admitted to take 3+ years) never actually gets processed before the N400 (target processing time 6 months) - my point was it's crazy having to file both with these timelines, instead of letting us skip filing the one they'll probably never process anyway.

That would’ve been better. They probably like to get the money from I-751.

I just wish this I-751 filing could be done online like N-400. That could’ve avoided the wastage of so much paper prints and also the unnecessary anxiety for receipt notice and biometric notice.

I-751 Timeline:

Jan 12, 2022 : Sent I-751 application package via USPS

Jan 14, 2022 : Delivered to USCIS Phoenix lockbox
