But in typical socialist fashion, they weren’t content with simply
encouraging people to switch to EVs. Many European countries almost immediately started making plans to ban gas-powered cars and trucks and make EVs mandatory. Lots of Europeans wanted to get out ahead of the curve and began snapping the newer models up. But then came the start of the war in Ukraine, cutting energy supplies just as Europe was trying to wean itself off of fossil fuels. Now, in a rather embarrassing reversal, Switzerland is considering legislation that would ban people from driving electric vehicles except in urgent conditions over the winter because there simply might not be enough juice on the grid to recharge them.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

Yanno, I love the concept of EVs.  And while I have given @Mike E a modicum of grief over the past few months, I respect the fact that he bought his for FUN (and anyone who has not test-driven a Tesla is MISSING OUT ON LIFE!!).

That being said, people need to be aware of the TCO (True Cost to Own, compliments of Edmunds.com) of owning an EV.  "Saving money on gas" comes at a very high pre-paid bill.  EVs have been trying to become mainstream since the late 1800's, and the tech might almost be here now, but the infrastructure as well as the initial outlay of $$$ is not quite where it needs to be just yet.  Maybe in a year or two.

The demise of the Toyota Tundra is a telling sign of the times, to be sure.

Completely agree, EVs and ICE can coexist in a non-government regulatory world.  What is interesting is much like Covid restrictions, governments are doing what they can as a means of controlling people, if these elite get what they want and EVs take over, they will pivot to driving EV’s (which are truly not zero emission) out as well and do everything they can to herd folks into unsustainable and dirty cities and force other means of transportation.

Anyway, in reality, the economic realities you point out are spot on.  We just bought a new car for the wife, looked at an EV as it would suit her use case, but to get an EV with all the bells and whistles she wanted it would have taken 13 years in savings to payback the initial cost.  Since the plan is to only keep the vehicle 3-4 years, this made no economic sense.  When I mentioned this to folks that are all EV, they told me we should buy a cheaper EV.  I guess these folks are of the same mindset that there should only be one option of vehicle to buy and we should all be happy with it (you can have any color you want as long as what you want is black).

Btw, I hadn’t heard that the Tundra was cancelled, are you sure you are not referring to the Nissan Titan?

Not cancelled, just fell short in a quality survey I read recently.  I think it was Consumer Reports, but didn't save the link.  Just kind of surprised me because usually Toyotas get high marks.
