Should I get a SSN in the mail after receiving my green card?

Do I get one automatically like it happened with my EAD card?

Did you check the relevant boxes on I-485 and I-765 to receive SSN?

If not, you would have to go to SSA office and apply for SSN.

So you have a SSN, most people apply for one with an EAD

You already have an SSN.

So fill out an SS-5 form, go to the SSA office, and apply for a new SS card that is not restricted

I was wondering  since there was a change of status maybe that number wasnt valid anymore or im not allowed to use it.

If you get a new SSN you need to

1. Not use that SSN

2. go to SSA to fix it.

exactly, but that one said it was only valid for work.

Actually, it said the SS card was valid for work only if you had authorization to work in the US (paraphrased).  The card can be used for taxes, opening accounts, etc.

~~ Topic moved from AOS forum to SSN sub-forum ~~

You will have to go in person to SSA and request to remove the work authorization line. They will mail you a new card, same number but no annotation

Can I still use the number for taxes, job applications, etc even if the card is not updated?

Yes, absolutely

Once hired, for I-9 purposes you’d have to show your GC as the other option is DL/state ID along with an unrestricted SSN. Updating your ssn card is important in case in the future you’ll have an expired GC. It’ll just make life easier by showing ID and unrestricted ssn

exactly, but that one said it was only valid for work. Now with the GC i dont know if i need to get a new social security card.

I check the I485 over and over and I dont see anything regarding the SSN.

It actually states it's only valid for work WITH DHS authorization.  You have work authorization now with your GC.  Regardless, you can either head into your local SSA office or send the application online to get a new card that doesn't state "with DHS authorization".  Your number will remain the same.

Can take a few weeks.

Wait patiently for the updated UNRESTRICTED SSN that you applied for on your I485 (IF you actually applied for one on your I485/ you haven't explained that).

Fill out your blank timeline as membership to VJ requests.

That's the thing, I went back to the I485 form and I can't see anything about the SSN or card.  I applied in May 2021.
