When I went to the SSA to update, they said there is no need to issue a new card (mine had restrictions removed after green card). Said that my citizenship status is updated in their database and just gave me piece of paper stating the same. I wasn't convinced as and wanted to speak to a supervisor. The guy was very nice and said the same thing - no need for a replacement card if you are just updating citizenship status. So, I let it be.

FYI, there is a limit on how many replacement cards you can get for the same SSN. Max three in a year and 10 in a lifetime. I am on my 3rd or 4th card, I think.

What paper did they give you that said you are US citizen?
I updated my status and they gave me one general paper where it says I applied card on this date.
P.S. the guy said I won't be getting a new card as they have updated my citizenship status in their status.

A print out that I updated my SSN information on that day. No mention of Citizenship on that paper.

When i brought my wife to SSA to update her SS record to show U.S. citizenship, the clerk showed us a print out of the update. She would not authorize a new cars nor would she give my wife a copy of the printout, but she did let her take a photo. The printout is titled:

“SSNAP Printout for Replacement [sic] Social Security Number Card”

The printout had various biographic data including:

“Citizenship: US”

So we are satisfied her record was updated, and almost as importantly, we’ve proof the update was attempted.

I did that first time when I applied for SSN as green card holder. I took picture of SSNAP print out.
This time the guy did not give me any SSNAP and I forgot to ask as well.

Can one just update their SS record (not a new SS card) by visiting the local SS office with a copy of their Naturalization certificate a good month after their Oath?

The ceremony MC said it'd be fine to visit the local SS office in 10 days as it takes about that long for them to be notified of the new naturalization statue.

Original Nats with the State department with the US Passport application. Thanks!

No. They need to see either ORIGINAL naturalization certificate or US Passport. If you have your passport then take your passport with you. I got my passport but haven't gotten back my naturalization certificate yet. So, I took my passport and  it worked.

No. Originals only.

Yes going sooner than 10 days is generally ineffective.

We went 34 days after my wife naturalized. We did not bring her naturalization certificate; that document belongs in a safe and besides which the passport agency had not returned it by then. Instead, we used her passport.

And what about the passports?

No, they are not sending out a new card when updating citizenship status.

If you want a new card, you can always request one with some other reason - lost, disfigured etc.

Both Passport and Naturalization certificate are with the State Department, so suspect I'll have to wait till I get my Passport back to get status updated with SS office.
