Congratulations! Hopefully the long wait will be something you folks will chuckle about in times to come.

Given the gap in time between when the I-751 was filed and when the interview happened, how many supporting documents of the intervening time did you take? Past 6 months? A year? The entire time window?

I did 18 months of bank statements, 12 months utility bills. Quite frankly I think that was as far back as I could go at this time because I was not meticulously printing statements month-by-month over a two and a half year period. A lot of places only save your statements so far back.

I think I had four or five years of tax returns (some overlap there from when we submitted the I-751). I went back four or five rental contracts when we had an apartment (again some overlap).

I'm surprised I didn't get a hernia lugging that all over the city yesterday. Against a cold wind no less.

The entire time window?

Our USCIS officer wanted to see evidence of marriage for the gap between filing the I-751 and combo interview date.  The gap was 44 months.  I took a several bank statements from beginning to end of the gap, along with a clear paper trail of our leases and addresses during that time.  The officer was most interested in the leases and drivers licenses to show us at the same address.  I also gave him the bank statements.  He was also interested in the ADIT stamp wife received after the I-751 extension letter expired.  He even gave me the option of staying in the room for the N-400.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Everyone at the office was confused with the split scheduling of I-751 and N-400. I showed up at 7am when the I-751 interview was scheduled as per the notice (but the notice did not have my A-Number or my case number), and everyone was super kind in trying to accommodate me. In the end the officer hurriedly prep’d for a combo interview at 7:30. He waived my I-751 (his words were “I see your kid is napping on you, don’t need more proof, just get their birth certificate with you”). By 9:15 we were out of the building with my certificate of naturalization.

Congratulations! You've made it! :) I think the split interview scheduling just shows how disorganized they are in boston.

Hey team! I am officially an American Citizen!

Just a quick piece of advice for anyone going through the process: even if you already have your ten-year Green Card, be prepared for an I751 interview. During the N-400 interview, the officer took my husband for an I751 and asked my husband and me a question we always disagree on. He kept trying to get me to give the answer my husband had given him, but I stood my ground and gave my own answer. It was a bit of a funny situation (my husband told the officer, this is the answer, but my wife will tell you this), and I was a bit upset at the time, but it went well. I passed all the civics and English tests. Finally, the officer asked me to take the oath today and become a citizen!

I am so happy, relieved to have completed the process, and proud to be an American.

Thank you all for being here for me throughout the almost six years it has taken to get to this point!

Hugs,

Cata

Finally naturalized today. Wanted to share my experience at the Moakley Courthouse if this helps others.

The time written on the letter was 12:30 and we showed up around 12:00. It took about 20 minutes to clear through both security (they take your cellphones and water bottles) and to check in with USCIS staff. Then the families and immigrants are separated into two attached but separate rooms (separated only by glass). We sat around waiting for the judge for about an hour until they entered the room at 1:30. After fairly routine and quick proceedings (~20 minutes) the immigrants were released to pick up their certificates.

We have our oath coming up soon too in the Moakley courthouse.  I’m confused because online it says the ceremony is 1:30 but the letter says 12:30.  I’m wondering what time to have family and friends show up?

Whichever is the earliest to ensure not to miss it. I'd also think letter is more accurate. Online status is not legal binding.
