@From_CAN_2_US sorry to hear about your mother's health issues, I hope she recovers soon! Another option for people with strong passports, similar to you e.g. Canadian, British, Australian, Italian etc is to naturalize under 5 year rule. Then marital union question should never come up.

I actually am no Canadian born and don’t yet have a Canadian passport. But I probably will soon, as my Canadian citizenship application is in progress.

 

Yes, I am considering to wait until 5 years to apply for naturalisation to avoid any possible issues.
