How important is removing DSH authorization on SSN?

Hey all, I became a citizen back in 2021 and so my immigration journey is complete. With that said, one thing I never did was go to the SSA office to change out my card to remove the DHS authorization text on my social security card. It's one of those numbers I have memorized and never look at my actual card.

Since becoming a citizen, we have relocated cross country, opened new bank accounts, and got on with our lives. No entity has ever flagged anything with my social security number; so I assume it's been changed on the backend when banks etc look up details.

SSA offices are now open (they may have been for a while) and so I am looking to get an appointment to go and get it changed.

With that said, is there a downside to have not got it changed already? For example, I pay my social security each pay cheque, would I still receive the monthly social security when I reach retirement age? Thanks in advance!

Remove the restriction (bring your naturalization certificate with you) and they’ll update your SSA record to show you’re a citizen.

Why wouldn’t you want to update it? People oftentimes use SSN plus DL for employer’s I-9 when starting a new job.

Oh I do, it’s just not been on my mind the last couple of years. I didn’t realize you had to until Covid hit, when offices were shut. I never felt comfortable having to post my green card in, on the off chance it was lost, so delayed doing it. Then life continued and it wasn’t on my mind.. until just now :D

My main question is to verify that nothing “bad” happens seeing as I haven’t. It sounds like the main thing is employment verification, which hasn’t been an issue given I’ve been with my same company the entire time

Now that you're a citizen you have to update SSA about that anyways and while doing that you can request for a new card without the text.

But yes, nothing bad happens because your card has the text.

Very important

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

It is just one of those things that needs to be done. Maybe not today or tomorrow (figuratively), but eventually. It’s super quick and easy to do, you’ll be in and out in less than an hour.

I too didn’t feel comfortable sending my naturalization certificate and my SS card through the mail, and during covid there were no appointments. I did call because I was wondering about repercussions if card was not updated and I was told I’m good because system shows the change. I was also told that there are people who never get an updated SS card.
Personally, I wanted to update my card and have immigration process behind me so as soon as they were open to public, i got an appointment, was done in 5 minutes and received an updated SS card in the mail less then a week later. I was naturalized in 12/2020 and updated SS card 4 months ago.

not too important.  when was the last time yo showed a person your physical ssn card?

7 years ago a bank refused to open an account because they misunderstood the text.  other than that never been an issue in a decade
