Intent to Marry - Handwritten

Hello,

My fiance lives in Peru and the only thing I'm needing to finish the paperwork is his intent to marry - he does not have a printer.  Is it still acceptable to hand write the intent to marry and then send me a photo of it to print out?

Thank you, first timer here!

Greetings!

I went to Peru and every hotel has computers and printers not to mention the plenty of internet cafe's around. Handwritten letters are very authentic, but once you print it out without a wet signature and date, then I am not so sure if that will be honored. I would suggest having her handwritten signed and dated, then ask her to go to an internet or hotels to type it for her with a minimum fee then let her sign and date it as well. So, in case one is not accepted then you will already have the other one as a backup. Let her mail it to you via FedEx.

note: Plus, if you print it out then it is no longer original but merely a photocopy.

Wet signatures are not needed and are not a requirement. I wouldn’t waste my time and money on international shipping

Your plan sounds fine as long as the handwriting is eligible. Scanning instead of taking a picture would be ideal, a lot of phones have that option now. I scanned and sent the letter by email to my now husband and he printed it out and submitted it with the petition.

Yes my then fiancée was in the same situation in Burma and I had her do just that.  I sent her a photo by text message or email of the unsigned  statement of intent to marry. She then wrote it out by hand and signed and dated it and sent me back a photo of what she had written, signed, and dated.  I converted the photo into a scan (iPhone’s notes app lets you do this now … back then I used an app called ScannerPro) so it looked like a photo copy.

Holographic documents are legally more powerful anyway.

No need mail back anything.  USCIS policy on acceptable signatures:

https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-1-part-b-chapter-2

  • An original signature on the benefit request that is later photocopied, scanned, faxed, or similarly reproduced, unless otherwise required by form instructions

If you are really worried about it get it notarized

No need to get it notarized. Also notarization  isn’t a thing in some countries.

Thank you so much! He ended up getting it scanned in and sent over to me - appreciate your kind responses!  And now I just need to assemble everything 😫🤤

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
