Where did you read that? I just got an email saying my husband was approved for his green card and it would be mailed out. Our name is not on the mailbox so I hope that's not the case. I heard the green card just comes in a plain white envelope that doesn't even look like anything importnat so I don't think they will send it back... it's not registered mail or anything that I know of.

AOS approved 7/20/07!!!

It has happened to a few people but it is not always the case. What you should do is talk to your mailman and tell him/her that you are expecting your greencard and hopefully that way they will keep an eye out for it and would not send it back.

I never received my greencard and I was told at infopass appointment that my name should be on the mailbox or it will be returned... if you can not put your name on the outside of your mailbox then do as I did and put it on the inside where the mail person can see it... I got my replacement Greencard with no problems...

Yes, there have been people on this site who have had their Green Card returned as non-deliverable because their name is not on their mailbox. USCIS recommends that the name of the Green Card applicant be on their mailbox to ensure delivery.

Where did you read that? I just got an email saying my husband was approved for his green card and it would be mailed out. Our name is not on the mailbox so I hope that's not the case.

Just put your name on your mailbox then! Some sticky tape and a peice of paper, you can sort it out in like 2 mins. ;)

For some reason, we seemed to have a bit of on-and-off with this situation. We never had a problem receiving USCIS mail at our mailbox, even when my husband's name wasn't on it, however... after having a peice of convention-related mail returned, we put his name on it just as a safeguard. Better safe than sorry? We received it fine, and just used a little taped-on list of the house's occupants, which ended up being pretty long since we have six people living in my place. Heh.

And I am one of the ones who had no problems receiving anything at our mailbox and all that is on it is our house number.

One potential problem I had which didn't turn into a problem because my mailman was so conscientious is that the address label on my 2nd EAD was so incredibly smeared when it was printed that the name was illegible, the town and state were illegible and only the house number and the first part of the street name and the zipcode were legible if you looked very closely and worked to make it out. This smearing had to have happened as the label was being printed - I checked and the ink didn't run after it was dry so had to happen when it was wet. I am so grateful that my postman bothered to take the time and trouble. I suspect that if my label was so badly smeared there were certainly others as well and wonder how much of the returned mail to USCIS was because of illegible address labels from their end.

There's some inconsistency in what type of envelope the GC (and EAD) arrives in. Some have the USCIS emblem on it with instructions not to forward. Some receive envelopes that are plain white, no USCIS and no instructions on it.

Your best bet is to put your name on your mailbox if you can. I have a mailslot right on my front door and I put a piece of masking tape on the edge with our names. You can only see it when you lift the slot (and the mailman has seen it plenty of times already).

This is a debate that happens once in a while on VJ. Usually lots of people will post that they didn't put their names on their mailbox, and everything works out great for them. The trouble is for the small number of people who didn't put their name on their mailbox and did have a problem, your reassurances are meaningless.

The fact is putting your name on your mailbox is recommended by USCIS and is extremely easy and quick thing to do.

Both USPS and USCIS are inconsistent with the way they enforce rules, its good to remove as many variables in process.

I think some people are confused about exactly where their name is supposed to be.

Just to clarify, you do not have to have your name written all fancy anywhere on the outside of your incoming mail box, the way numbers are written on a house or the curb. Right inside the door of the box, you should tape a small white piece of paper with the name of everyone that receives mail at your house. It can even be just last names if you're concerned about privacy (although your mailman should be the only person to look inside the box, besides you and your family).

It is an easily fixed problem, I agree that all the debate is silly, just tape your name in there like loads of other people have said :)

Enough people have gotten their USCIS mail rejected because it's not in there that I wouldn't want to risk it...
